My own experience is abosolutly abismal and of all the hundreds of posts on other forums I've read, I can't find one that says "yes, tiscali are the best ever" or even "their service is quite adequate"

    !

OK then, I have found Tiscali to be perfectly adequate. I now pay £16 for a 512 connection, generally getting full speed out of it. It slows down a bit at busy times, but not much. I have only once had an outage, and it was short. I can regrade my line speed at will online (I am out of my fixed contract time) up or down. Email appears reliable. I know many have had problems with Tiscali, but I have done OK with them.

  • Well at least there's one Crunchy

But I fear you are a member of an ever decreasing minority of content users.

But in the meantime, I wish you well .....if in the future you're afflicted in the same way we are (bear in mind that the majority of complaints are from mid 2004 onwards, so perhaps your time hasn't come yet) then maybe you won't be quite as charitable!

Good luck to you, .......as I have little doubt you'll need it!

    Hi there all,

I recently signed up for Tiscali's £15.99 a month broadband service. Reading their terms and conditions, it seems that the monthly upload/download limit is 30GB and not 2GB as mentioned in the article on this subject. So far - no poblems - seems like a really good deal - free modem and set up. The only thing I had to buy was a RJ11 cable as my PC is situated quite far from a telephone socket - 12 metres ! But even this long cable length has not degraded the quality of data transfer speeds.

If and when that time comes, I will switch provider, which will be a pain in the neck due to the datastream issue (IMO this alone is the reason I would not actually recommend Tiscali, and I believe the major flaw in Martin's article).

I have been through many ISP good and bad, the good have often got worse, the bad better, the bad buy out the good etc. So while it works, and while switching means 10 days+ loss of service, I'm staying put!

The 30GB applies to 512Kb accounts. 1MB account has a 2GB cap for £15.99 or 15GB for £19.99. However, Tiscali change their prices more often than I change my underwear...

I won't bore you with all the technical reasons that I am now so disatisfied with Tiscali, but as this is a site about saving money, as Crunchy said Tiscali change their prices an awful lot, so I'd recommend that you keep an eye on your bank statement as I have had a few weird and wonderful prices appear from tiscali.

To clarify that 30gb limit, that is a combined up and down transfer limit, ie 15 up and 16 down still exceeds your limit and don't be fooled into thinking thats just files that you down/upload, if you watch internet tv or listen to streaming audio, the bbc radios on the net really do eat up the bandwidth as they adjust themselves to best suit your connection and you don't realise just how much bandwidth they use, for example we have 11mbits each way at work and got a complaint from our isp, who happens to be a friend of mine, about the bandwidth we were using being very high compared to previous months...it turned out to be one of our directors had started listening to radio 2 to do the quiz's in the morning, so be careful as it all adds up very quickly.

I'm wanting to change from dial up to Broadband, and was reading the Broadband article and was going to go for the Tiscali 1mb with 2GB usage, however, when I looked at the details I needed a BT phone line.

I'm on a a Telewest cable line and so the offer didn't apply to me. Does anyone know what would be the best deal for me without changing my phone line?

Why don't you just go for the broadband from Telewest itself?
