Having a look at Netgears web site, when you installed the driver you should have also installed their Netgear Wireless set up assistant. If you did then that is the program that manages the wireless configuration for you. If you said no at that point you have to manually set up the windows wireless configuration. You did mention that back in a further post "Windows cannot configure this wirelss connection
If you have enabled another program to mamage this wireless connection, use that software"

Can you have a look in your programs to see if there is a netgear tool?

  • Has the PC got a normal network card in it, i.e. one with an RJ45 plug on the back. If it has make sure this is disabled in the hardware profiles.

sorry getting confused with all this info

on my network connections details i have a IP of 169.254.60.109 to 255.255.0.0??? is this what details I should be looking at?

Even though your wireless say that it is connected, you have not been issued a proper IP address by your router. (169.254....) is wrong. Therefore you will not be able to connect to your router.

Do not run any AOL software on the PC that you are trying to connect, it is not necessary and may confuse things, simply use IE. However until you can get a proper IP issued by the router you will not be able to connect to the net.

You did not answer the question about your firewall which could be blocking the connection. If you are using Netgear software, you should be able to change the wireless settings of your USB dongle.

So what happens if you click or right click on the wireless icon in your system tray? You should be able to configure it using the Netgear software if it is installed correctly.

What firewall are you using? It needs the IP range 192.168.0.1 through 192.168.255.255 in the "Internet" or "trusted" zone.

255.255.0.0 is your subnet mask (sorry to get techy) espresso is asking if you have a firewall, and saying that if you do you need to allow ip range 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.255.
However your saying your ip address is 169.254.60.109 which isn't the address from the router (at least not a normal one)
169.xxx.xxx.xxx is a range of addresses assigned when a machine is not networked

As a last thought here, it does state that if using a non-microsoft wireless configuration software that automatic wireless networking should be disabled.

    to do this

    1. open control panel.

    2. then network connections

    3. right click on your wireless network

    4. On the wireless Networks tab, clear the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings check box

    5. reboot the pc and then try to connect.

    Good Luck

It is not necessary to run any AOL software on your computers so just close it down. The router establishes the connection to AOL for you and then your other PC connect to the router, using either wireless or a wired connection. The fact that you are getting this 169.254..... means that you are not actually connected to your router on this PC yet, so until you sort this out, you will not be able to connect though the router to the internet. You need to get into the configuration settings for your wireless dongle and check that you have got 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS server address automatically' boxes checked? If you have disabled your firewall, that is not causing this problem.

Hope this helps - means nothing to me

No default gateway... it should be 192.168.0.1.
    Might I suggest:
    1, remove the netgear software
    2, switch the pc off
    3, have a cupper
4, using your laptop save your wep key to your usb key
5, using your laptop go to the netgear site and download the latest drivers for your network dongle
6, install the new netgear software on your pc following the instructions.

It might turn out that you missed something, it could be dodgy drivers or a dodgy install (it happens)

    Mainly don't stress (it won't help :D )
  • if it says connected, and ipconfig says 169.x.x.x, then check your wep/wpa key matches the one on the router.

WPA with a text key is easier to use and type than hex.

Connected means it can see something, but won't talk, or be issued with a 192.168.x.x ip address unless the encryption type and key matches.

To check this, turn encryption off on the router for a sec, or hump the PC over to the router, and plug it in.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
