Cannot get PC to accept wireless connection

Options
Hello All

Can anyone help with my situation???

Yesterday I installed netgear wireless router in order for the kids to be able to access the internet.

Set it up and their laptop is working fine - hence me posting this:T

The problem is.......
(sorry I am not technical so bear with me)
My PC which is approx 4-5 years old which will be replaced fairly soon anyway but I need internet access for work.

I purchased the netgear adaptor compatible with the netgear router.

Have installed the drivers and this is showing up on settings page it has recognised the wireless network says it connected but....
Unable to access internet through AOL on the connection page:mad:

Someone please advise as my computer is going to go through the wall today:eek:

I have tried all the on screen troubleshooting stuff.

Like i said I have icons in the system tray to say connected to wireless network and connection is excellent, so why can't I connect through AOL?

I do hope someone can help, any help would be greatly appreciated

Thankyou i n advance

  • On the PC, click Start - Run - type cmd - OK

In the new window that's just opened enter:

    ipconfig /all > temp.txt
    notepad temp.txt

Copy and paste the Notepad contents into this thread.
  • Your set up should be something like this.
Broadband modem to netgear wireless router which is hard wired to the pc you talk about.

or broadband wireless router hard wired to the said pc..

or is the pc you mention in another room away from the access point to the modem/router?

Post as to how you have it all set up..

  • have you told the PC what your encryption key is, according to that ipconfig report, it isn't connected to your router, despite what the connection status says.

This means you aren't connected to the router.

Control Panel - Network Connections. How many wireless network connections are listed and what is their status?

Have you got a USB memory pen to transfer the notepad file? Far easier than typing and no chance of making mistakes!

What operating system in on the computer that you are having difficulty connecting? It looks like you are not being assigned a correct IP address. Try Control Panel, Network Connections, Highlight your Wireless device, Change settings of this device, Highlight TCP/IP then Properties. Have you got Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically boxes checked?

  • Are you using WEP, or WPA?

If the PC has a normal ethernet card, hook it up to the router, goto 192.168.0.1 and copy and paste the key from the router.
