I tried this today. I went into my local O2 shop and asked about an upgrade. I was told they can no longer do upgrades on this tariff in shops but if I dialled 100 on my phone they would process it for me straight away. He also recommended I ask for a K800i as this was available for free.

When I got home I duly phoned but was immediately told no upgrades on that tariff. I would have to switch to another.

They may have told you 4 times that you will keep the PUFL tariff but have you got it in writing, you will have a hell of a job proving that it was said. You have agreed to a 12 month contract what happens after that, can you be sure that it will just revert to back the old PUFL. I have only had a bill for about £1.50 in total over the last few years I just use the free minutes. I am not going to risk it, they would love to get us all off this deal.

Millie the contract I signed is an upgrade contract and states on this under Services " Tariff : Existing Tariff "
As my existing tariff is PUFL I do not see how it could be cancelled ?
All I have agreed to is to have a "free upgrade" and to keep my PUFL for a "minimum" of 12 months !
I think the O2 computer systems can't cope with these type of legacy tariffs and see them as normal contract phones, leaving the 02 staff to denie upgrade options. But if you have a Saturday girl or boy with not too much training ................
  • Just got my free k800i - thanks very very much Ajax.

lady in the shop said everything stay EXACTLY the same.

Unfortunately they didn't have any free memory cards in stock though but you can't have everything.

    PUFL
Last year us PUFLs managed to upgrade our phones at BT Shops.
I was hoping that I may have gotten an invitation to upgrade again, as it has been a year, and I was hoping I was on the upgrade cycle.
Has anyone ventured to attempt another upgrade, or was it a one off.

OK my PUFFL friends - time for this years upgrade.

Remember that you can use your free minutes for WAP (only recently noticed this!) so might want to get a phone that supports this as it is becoming an old technology now.

Best handsets available for free this year are Sony K850i and Nokia 6500 slide.

    Good luck.

I'm also curious about this. I haven't personally heard of any upgrades yet. I will enquire with O2 and find out..

In connection to people's questions - you don't get invited to upgrade (I certainly didn't). You merely go into a store, find someone stupid/inexperienced (i.e. on a Saturday) and enquire as to what your upgrade options are.

Going by most people's experiences you won't get anywhere whatsoever over the phone - will only work in store.
  • I had a call from 02 earlier this week - was very wary and asked loads of questions - guy reckoned he was from 02 Customer Services and they were offering free upgrades to PUFL customers. I was particularly suspicioius as 2 weeks previously I had been with my Mum on a severals treks to 02 shops trying to get her an upgrade on PUFL as her phone was defunct (not quite the original but nearly) - in the end we got something through the insurance that she has been paying all this time.

They guy convinced me it was genuine a deal, no change to terms and conditions, no new contract- just following a meeting 02 had decided to attempt to retain its PUFL customer (maybe they've a glut of phones). I insisted I wanted something in writing and it was supposed to arrive end of week - a brochure giving detail of phones on offer - for me and my Mum!

If I don't hear by next week will try my luck in the stores.

For what its worth thought I'd share!

Sounds interesting but are you sure it was O2 calling? Did they know you were on PUFFL or did you tell them that?

You often get companies pretending to be O2, Orange or whatever who are in reality on selling the products of such companies. These people will say almost anything in order to get a sale and you will usually end up with a nice expensive new and completely different contract.

However, if you and your mum are nice profitable customers then perhaps it is quite likely they would give you a new handset.
