How do you fix a desktop that has been thrown against the wall ;-)

It has taken forever to open the add/remove programs as in I went and made a sandwich and it was still making up it's mind whether it wanted to or not, the tower just sounds like it is turning over all the time but not actually achieving anything - just hope it plays ball

Aha it wants to play Avast has just informed that the database has been updated so that may have been the reason

How much free space is on the system drive (C:)?

Start > My computer > right click local disk (C:) > properties > general tab

Waddler_8 - is it worth trying to do some of this in safe-mode as it won't load some of the processes?

Getting there all java stuff gone(not literally but the ones mentioned) Free space on C drive is 33.3GB thats about 1/2 as used space is 35.1GB

It is doing what I ask just takes forever

I know I am not the least bit technically minded but it is ever since avast was installed it got slower I wondered wether after doing this it might be a good idea to uninstall avast to see if that improves things, then at least we'll know

You can if they don't rely on the MSIserver service running - which I think java at least does - may be wrong though without checking.
