Computer slow please check commit charge and Hijack this log for me please.

I had great advice a few years back when my computer got a virus so hope all you techie types acan help again.

I have a desktop running on XP and it is so slow, I used to have AVG on it but after said virus I changed to avast, since then it has been running slower but ok and tolerable for what I do surfing, word no downloads gaming etc. But now it is driving me up the wall It sometimes takes 1/2 hour between turning on and able to use it!! ( I also have laptop running vista with AVG- speedy compared to desktop) so saw sticky on how to get slow computer running quicker and thought I'd try. I do wonder if avast has something to do with it? Anyway I don't think it has a virus as I run Malwarebytes resgularly as well

So any ideas from the info below

    A couple of things:-
    Adobe is well out of date and needs updating, but that can wait for a little while until things are running better.
    I'd download and run startuplite from the same makers of MalWareBytes - it clears out unnecessary startup items (like Adobe and Quicktime).

    You'll need to type out the commit charges as (I don't know about anyone else) the picture hasn't come through.

    Do you use all the toolbars you have installed?
    If not I'd get rid of the ones use don't use.

    I am totally computer illerterate (and that applies to spelling as well ;-)) so wasn't sure what figures were what on the commit charge front will look and see if I can copy figures better.

    I have no idea what toolbars are inatalled probably don't use them.

    I have gone through and un-installed some programs I know I don't use but was careful as I don't know what I'm doing.
    I also uninstalled superspyware spybot (not used since last virus problem)- can easily re install later if needed. I also uninstalled google chrome - didn't even know I had it

    I am about to update avast as I have 6.0 but it says on sticky before I do best to get rid of all firewalls I looked and I have windows firewall only from what I can see so do I need to turn it off whilst I installl avast 7?

    Post an uninstal list too.

    Open HijackThis.
    1. Click Main Menu
    2. Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
    3. Look under System tools.
    4. Click on Open Uninstall Manager....
    5. Click on Save list....
    6. You will be prompted to save. Save it to a convenient location, such as your Desktop. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
    7. Notepad will open. Post the log.

    Try CCcleaner.com. I was going to renew webroots window washer but this free install cleans out a lot of garbage.

    This will list all the current software you have loaded.

    Remove any toolbars etc that you don't need and research any you dont understand or know about.

    Right so far I have done

    Malwarebytes
    CC cleaner
    reset IE to default
    installed and done startUp lite


    Not updated Avast to 7 yet as didn't know whether I needed to turn windows firewall off first.

    can't back up using microsoft support as I don't have xp disk - came preistalled when I bought the machine from Tesco (I know please don't laugh - it has served me well) so will have to look into that further

    Don't update avast just yet.

    • click on start
    • Click on control panel
    • Double click the icon add/remove programs
    • One by one, uninstall all the programs below:
    Adobe Reader 7.1.0

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
    Don't uninstall Java(TM) 6 Update 30

    Toolbars - Some like the added functionality(?) they bring - some (like me), see them as totally unecessary . If you don't want them - Uninstall them.
    Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer
Nectar Search Toolbar

    • Run HijackThis
    • Click on the scan button
    • Put a check beside the item listed below: 
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
    • Close all open windows and browsers/email etc...
    • Click on the Fix Checked button
    • When completed close hijackthis & REBOOT.

    Then manually update Java.

    Install Adobe Reader X from here: http://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/ (Uncheck any extra downloads offered, google toolbar, Mcafee security scan etc)

    After all the above post a new Hijackthis log
