Sorry if I seem completely stupid but I have been hearing a lot about reclaiming PPI from colleagues at work and wonder how to start. I brought my first home in approx 1988 through Standard Life mortgage with endowment (no longer have the policies). I then switched to Midland Bank (now HSBC ?) and from there on cannot remember which bank or building society I switched to until the house was sold some six years ago. During the period from 1988 to 2006 I had a number of personal loans. I have no paperwork whatsoever relating to any of these loans, all of which are paid off. I no longer have a mortgage (all paid off). However, I cannot believe that I am not entitled to some form of PPI. Where do I go to find out all my previous mortgage/credit card/personal loan details ? I did get wise to PPI at some stage and can remember saying "no" when asked if I wanted it. My job security meant I did not require it. However, is or was PPI automatically applied to credit cards ?
If I appear to be the most ignorant person re my financial affairs in the past I apologise. Rest assured I am much more savvy these days.0 -

If you had PPI, then it needs to have been mis-sold to you in order for you to be "entitled" to anything.0 -
Sorry for being unsure but I have checked a couple of loans with A&L and on the agreement it says No to Personal Loan Protection and all loans I have had I never take the protection so am I correct in saying I would not need to take these any further?0

(a)ascertain if you even had a PPI policy
(b)ascertain in what way, if any, it was mis-sold to you.
No point writing to the Bank saying "I don't know if I had PPI, but if I did it must have been mis-sold".
You need to do a little research first in order to complain successfully. Start by contacting the Bank in question and ask them directly if you ever had PPI. If this avenue doesn't yield results you can send them a Subject Access Request (SAR) letter.0 -

Some 18 years ago my wife & I took out a loan to settle a number of debts, after a being called in for discussion with the bank manager about our perpetual overdraft.
Once everything was agreed, the Bank Manager came back to us and said, as the loan was quite high, it would only be approved with PPI due to the risk. We agreed.
I think this was mis-selling.
We had the loan over some-years. We had a baby, my wife suffered Post Natal Depression so badly she could not go back to work, but our claim was rejected as it was 'pregnancy related'.
12-months after the birth, still suffering from mental ill-health, the diagnosis was changed from PND to Depression - we claimed, and the final few payments were covered.
Question: - does the fact we got some benefit from the PPI negate any claim?
Would any claim be reduced by the amount the PPI paid?
Any thoughts?
Many thanks0
