  • My husband had a mortgage in the 80s with the Cheltenham & Gloucester. We decided to go via MSE to try and reclaim PPI even though he no longer has the paperwork. He gave as much info as he could but basically the bank are saying they can’t help as they can’t trace anything. Is there anything further we can do as he’s pretty sure he had PPI on the mortgage.
    Thanks

PPI wasn't exactly common in the 80s, he is almost certainly thinking of MIG (which cannot be miss-sold, it was protection for the bank and you could avoid it with a bigger deposit or borrowing less) or life insurance (which was often mandatory for a mortgage). On top of that, unless he got the mortgage direct from C&G rather than via a broker, then it would be pre-regulation anyway. Any which way if no-one has any records left then your complaint is over.

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Did C&G even sell PPI in the 80s? I cannot recall the dates but they advertised for many years before Lloyds bought them that they did not sell insurances.

  • Hi. Does anyone have any experience of reclaiming PPI from Very.co.uk? I believe I have been paying PPI to them for years without realising but as I always find their customer services difficult to deal with I'd appreciate any constructive feedback. Thanks.

Send your complaint into them with your mis sale reasons.

It's the same procedure as with any lender.
  • Many thanks for taking the time to reply. So it sounds like there is no point in pursuing or getting the Financial Ombudsman involved?

The Bank have told you that, over three decades on, they can find no evidence of PPI.
    You have no evidence either.
The Ombudsman cannot produce such evidence.

Basically, any complaint you might make has ended before it's begun.

I don't know how you can not realise given PPI is on every statement where you carried a balance but if you feel it was miss-sold then write a complaint to them detailing your complaint reasons and evidence.

If neither of you have any evidence you had it then no, the FOS aren't going to ask them to refund you something you have no proof you ever paid?

  • Thank you so much MSE,

After years of following your site for money saving tips etc I finally decided to follow your ppi reclaiming guide to see what I was owed on a couple of Egg loans I took out in my youth...
I can remember at the time being annoyed that they would only allow me to have the loans if I took out PPI with them despite being in a well paid stable job....

Anyway, Friday a letter dropped through my door saying they've assessed the claim and upheld it...

    I'm now awaiting a cheque for £5,000!!!!

    Thank you so much!!!
