Facebook marketing is proving to be quite effective for me and has the advantage of having a good growth of customers who stay in one place, so no need to pay to get them to be a customer again. In a different way Twitter can be quite effective if you know how to handle it, other social network sites and sales sites can also be more useful than Google, it just depends what you're selling.

If sommone taps a key word into google and you're one of the first results, better still the first UK result, you've acheived.

You have to wonder how long facebook will last, I know it's massive at the moment, but back in the day so was friends reunited, myspace and bebo...

Even better when someone taps in a keyword and your products on Amazon, ebay and your website all come up in the top results.

Your loss if you are not utilising ebay, Amazon and other similar platforms to increase your customer base.

Not really, some people refuse to use ebay or paypal, and both ebay and amazon charge large fees for their service, so why give away slices of the cake when you can have all the cake?

But you're not getting the whole of the cake!! The people that would buy from you on Amazon or eBay might not find your site or even trust buying from it. Some people go straight to a platform they trust and never search the internet for other deals. If you really think you are getting the same number of sales solely on your website as you would if also listed on other platforms then you are very much mistaken!

If I sold on ebay and amazon it would take away sales from the website, and I'd be on less cake.

Given that I like cake, that would be bad.

Depends on how you structure your pricing.

Make your eBay and Amazon prices just slightly higher than your own website. You may find that you capture additional sales from those who would not find / trust your own website, but won't lose (too many, if any) of those who would.

You can't optimise your market share with only one route to market.

How does paying someone a large percentage when there's no need = my loss???

It's ebay brainwashing at work again, they want you to think that ebay is the *only* way to sell online, when in reality it's possibly the worst way to sell online.

And it baffles me how anyone can make any money selling on Amazon given the percentage of turnover they keep.

Not quite his loss, from past posts he wasn't allowed back on Ebay, that was his main gripe!

Is this statement from the same person who said Ebay was finished 5 years ago? I'll take my chances. Facebook marketing can actually be far more effective than Google, it really depends what and how you are selling. To just use Google and not have any alternatives could be very short sighted, no one knows how the future will pan out, Google could quite quickly up their rates and change at a whim, there are no certainties with any of these companies.

They are after all exceptionally large companies all after maximising profits, some have better marketing that makes them look nice and friendly.
