What things wont you economise on?:)

  • I refuse to economise on quality.
Milk has to be organic and Not homogonised. Eggs free range but pref organic, meat must be British and only from W'rose or butchers. Mince must be extra lean or minced steak. Only bacon from W'rose will do as it shrinks far less than from other supermarkets.
Yes You've guessed I'm a fan of Waitrose. I stalk the reductions ladies and always managed to get stocked up with plenty of meat bargains so I can spend a little extra on other items like free range or organic fruit and veg etc. Quality ground coffe is also non negotiable.
  • Just about the only things I won't compromise on are potatoes and tomatoes. Sainsbury's TTD Vivaldi potatoes (new ones for salads and the larger variety for mashing, roasting and jackets - such soft and fluffy insides mmm!) Same with tomatoes, Sainsbury's TTD Vittoria or nothing!. Oh and another thing - Onken fat free vanilla yogurt - no other fat free yogurt compares! Other than that I buy almost all my other shopping at Aldi.

Now reading through i've realised a few more that should have gone on my list:
    Marmite
Nutella....have tried pretty much all other brands and nothing compares
Eggs will always be free range, chicken at least red tractor standard and other meat as best quality as possible.

My husband is a coeliac so some things we can't sub for cheaper brands...gravy being one, Bisto best is pretty much the only one he can have

    Branston Beans
Eggs I buy from a local free range farm

If I can't get the Old Fashioned Peanut Butter Company Crunchy (which is 99.5% peanuts), I will just about stoop to Whole Earth Organic Peanut Butter (which is 97% IIRC and no added sugar - why would you want to add sugar to peanuts, ewwwww) but nothing lower than that as the amount of palm oil and sugar added to the lesser brands is ridiculous. :)

My sentiments exactly definitely on the sugar in peanut butter. I buy Whole earth and I dont think I have seen the one you referred to. Where do you get it from please?
  • The only branded things we insist on are fairy liquid and dairy free food. I'd be a flibble if I ate lactose.x

Just to say Lily 117, I've tried most of the items you say in Aldi's brands and they seem fine too me. There used to be a website you could compare Lidl and Aldi stuff and people would say what was good and what not to buy there. Perhaps someone on the forum could remind us. Thanks .

Cat, I've tried Aldi. Lidl, Tesco and Sainsburys digestives and honestly don't like any of them. The Aldi Lurpak-lookalike is quite nice though. Haven't tried any of the others so maybe I will give them a try :)

Great reading through the thread, thanks for all the replies :T

    Duracell batteries.

    Free range eggs and chicken.

We don't tend to buy brands, good thing we're not bothered as this helps keep the monthly shop at around £170 for 4 people :j but we are concerned about animal welfare which does make the meat, eggs, and milk pricier.

Oh and I forgot to add, I will only drink Kenco Smooth coffee (anything else just tastes like dirt!) and I don't drink tea but my OH will only drink Pg Tips. Think they're the only other brands we buy.
