What things wont you economise on?:)

Like most people I like good value for money. Was thinking about what things we don't/wont economise on in our house.
Came up with these.
McVities digestive biscuits - IMO no other digestives taste as good.
Sun Pat peanut butter.
Lurpak butter.
HP baked beans.
Vosene shampoo (for my OH, even though he doesn't have dandruff!)
Imperial Leather soap (even though there are now only three in a pack!)

What about all of you?

I don't buy very many branded things but the ones either I, or my DH or sons, insist on are:
Warburtons Toastie bread (don't mind own brand wholemeal but for white it has to be Warbies!)
    Country Life spreadable butter
Lynx bodyspray :o Have tried buying them an assortment from Tescos own to the cheap brands in Home & Bargain but they insist it must be Lynx - ripoff merchants!!
Pepsi Max - HATE any other brands of cola!
    Fairy Washing up liquid

I think other than that, we pretty much get Tesco's own / Value everything!!!

    Fairy liquid.

'Real' food - butter, I'm not bothered how much it costs, we do not use the 'm' word in this house. Have a pack of lescure at the moment and it's delish; organic whole milk; decent meat. I try to buy as little pre-made food as possible. I tend to have a bit of a rule that I don't eat it if I can't pronounce it! (Consequently, I don't buy much branded food!)

I'm sure I've posted more in the past but that's all I can think of right now.
  • If I can't get the Old Fashioned Peanut Butter Company Crunchy (which is 99.5% peanuts), I will just about stoop to Whole Earth Organic Peanut Butter (which is 97% IIRC and no added sugar - why would you want to add sugar to peanuts, ewwwww) but nothing lower than that as the amount of palm oil and sugar added to the lesser brands is ridiculous.

Branston beans as they are better than any other brand by miles.

Proper Marmite, not own make 'yeast extract' or, even worse, vegemite.

Nivea 'Happy Time' shower gel, because it's lovely!

    I think that's about it. :)

Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose.
  • Just to say Lily 117, I've tried most of the items you say in Aldi's brands and they seem fine too me. There used to be a website you could compare Lidl and Aldi stuff and people would say what was good and what not to buy there. Perhaps someone on the forum could remind us. Thanks .

Baked beans - Branston all the way
Lager - has to be branded and buy whatever is on offer from Stella, Becks, Carlsberg Export, K1664, Grolsch, Brahma
  • Meat and chicken:
Chicken must be at least free range but even better if organic
I will only buy British meat as the welfare standards are higher.
Milk and butter must be organic
I was off to conquer the world but I got distracted by something sparkly :D

  • Wine, not that I buy expensive stuff anyway but tried some from Lidl, thought I'd been poisoned. Apart from that I'll economise on anything at all.

    Eggs - always free range.
Toilet Paper - I won't buy cheap stuff.
    Fairy Liquid
    Anchor Spreadable
    Warburtons or Kingsmill Bread
    Sure deodorant
    Cereals
    Frozen Chips
Baked Beans - don't like the cheap ones.

Been thinking of going onto organic milk as it's a lot better for you than normal but haven't made the switch as yet.

That's all I can think of for now.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.
