If you believe in rainbow bridge, please leave the thread now, as warned. I'm not here to upset anyone who's recently lost a pet.

But everyone else - come on now, PLEASE tell me I'm not the only one who thinks this garbage is ridiculous for grown adults to go on about!

I've lost pets. It's very sad. I've genuinely grieved for them. I don't make up imaginary my little pony-esque care bear yellow brick road weirdness to deal with it. I assume it's some peculiar American thing we've caught in the last few years.

Do you think people really believe in this?

If they do - HOW can they?
If they don't - why go on about it? It's just WEIRD!

All the posts on here from people who have lost their pets... and always posts made by others about the rainbow bridge. I could possibly understand if you were talking to toddlers about a lost pet. But otherwise...it baffles me. Really baffles me. If I'd just lost my pet I wouldn't want anyone talking to me like I was suddenly a nutcase.

How is it weird? If it helps those through the grieving process then what is the problem?

I don't believe in Rainbow Bridge for pets (I doubt anyone does), nor have I mentioned Rainbow Bridge in any of my posts BUT I wouldn't come on here taking the 'P' out of those who want to have nice thoughts of their beloved pets running free - now that is just weird and heartless.

flak jacket on. I know I sound like a cow, I just don't get it. I get how much pets mean to people. I get grieving for them. I totally understand how they are part of the family.

I don't believe in an afterlife for us humans either, so this is really pushing things for me. But as far as I'm aware non of the major religions say animals go to heaven either, so whether you are a believer or not in that, you still don't have any basis for meadows full of pets.

Yeah, you really don't get it!

I highly doubt that the people who post about 'rainbow bridge' actually think there's a magical land with a real rainbow where all the dogs live happily together after they die. Honestly, that's ridiculous, surely you didn't think people thought it was real?

Its not about actually believing in a literal place, its just a way of offering condolences, and in my opinion, its mostly a trigger for people to think back to when their dogs were youthful, healthy and energetic and remember that way rather than the old or ill dog that was suffering and that they just saw being euthanised.

I don't post rainbow bridge stuff, because its not something I personally draw comfort from, but I think you must be seriously lacking in empathy and imagination to truly not see at all why people do.

Yup, personally I've always found the poem 'over blown' and American - flashy and totally lacking in substance. However some people take comfort in it so there you go.....as long as those people are aware that if they ever tried to comfort me with talks of bridges they'd probably get a slap ;)

Now to me, the most beautiful thing I've ever seen written about a pet was Byron's epitaph to his beloved Newfound:

    Near this Spot
are deposited the Remains of one
    who possessed Beauty without Vanity,
    Strength without Insolence,
    Courage without Ferosity,
and all the virtues of Man without his Vices.

Sadly, most of those wonderful lines wouldn't apply to my dogs. Much as I love them they are neither beautiful, strong nor especially courageous!

I actually love the lyrics of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers song 'Death of a Martian' about Flea's dog. I can't listen to it without crying though, which ruins it somewhat...

    What is Rainbow Bridge?

    What is Rainbow Bridge?

It's the theme of a poem about a place where pets go when they die- a green meadow with a rainbow bridge connecting it to heaven. There the pets are healthy and happy again and can play with other pets until their owner joins them and they cross the bridge into heaven together.

    "The Rainbow Bridge Poem

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together..."
