Speech Recognition Software

Hey everyone. I have M.E and one of the symptoms I get is extreme exhaustion which affects how much I can type. I've just started an OU course and obviously I'll have assignments to write and I was thinking of investing in some speech recognition software to help me with the exhaustion of typing.

I've heard of Dragon but haven't heard of any other companies.

Does anyone have any recommendations of any speech recognition software packages?

Thank you in advance.

Dragon Naturally Speaking is about the only contender nowadays. But also 'check out' that which is built-into Windows 7...

Get in touch with OU and talk to them about needing help during the courses. My mother did an OU course with help, and they actually provided her with a Dictaphone and software. We are going back a few years though, so they might not offer that help now. (she has ME as well, and that was her main reason for needing it as well)

It takes a while to get them set up, and she was disappointed with the results sometimes. But it was better than having to type it in to begin with.

Oh, her! I thought you meant the person from Hi-De-Hi.:rotfl: (I just realised that her name is in fact Su Pollard!). Not with it today.

    I like Sue Perkins.:p

I use Dragon all the time (including to type this),as I have dyslexia.

I'm a 2nd year mature student at university and have been using it for about 12 months.

It is extremely easy to use, and makes my life so much easier, I'm amazed at how accurate is.

It was recommended that I had Dragon after seeing the access ability team at my university and the cost was covered from the disabled students allowance (DSA) via student finance England.

Don't badger the poor girl with thinly veiled chat up lines, but I saw the resemblance too :p (yours not Tish's)

Oh and i remember dragon when it was very new, it soon learned to swear , I would imagine by now it probably can even mimic my gestures too. My friend uses it all the time and she thinks it is very good too(she swears all the time via email and suggests that it mis-heard her voice which is as close to posh as I know)

  • Dragon is by far the best and reads your voice really well after you have "Trained" it to yourself.

    Thanks everyone for the replies.

It looks like Dragon is the way to go then. Someone mentioned that I might be able to get it from the DSA at the OU so I might look into that, but I really don't mind paying for it as it will be extremely useful.

Does anyone know what the difference is between the Standard Home edition and the Premium edition?

    Thank you.
