Got one on the phone at the moment....

got bored of playing along after about 5 minutes, so they are currently listening to an audio book of the adventures of huckleberry finn. There is now at least two voices on there trying to ask me if I am still on the line.

Some of you guys have too much spare time! If I wasn't such so tight-pocketed (its the Yorkshire in me) I'd pay for callerid and ignore all hidden number calls. With this lot, rather than just hang up, I say I haven't got a computer. Not much fun really as the call is rather short :-)

caller id is free? well it was with BT. now with talktalk and its still free.

yes had several of these calls.
try to keep it going but just end up telling them where to put it after a few mins :p

since having my broadband problems with virginmedia, i've been inundated with indian calls telling me i have a problem with my computer and to go online to this and that webpage. funny how when i say i havent got the internet they put the phone down.
example just today when i finally got it working i've had 2 calls, latest one calling himself windows technical support or something like it. i had 3 yesterday, 2 the day before that. in the 5 weeks its taken virgin to fix my internet i think i must have had about 20 calls from these scammers.

I feel left out. I've never had one of these calls.
How do I add a signature?

I haven't had one of these Windows scams yet, but I had one recently from a geezer (Indian accent) who asked if he could have the details of my home insurance. Sez me:

    "Why, who are you?"

    Sez he:

"We need to update our database"

Me: "OK, but who are you?"

Him: "We need to update our database"

Me (warming to my task): "Yes, you said that already, but who are you?"

<strings this out for several minutes, until...>

    Him: "We're the UK government"

Me (stifling laughter): "Really? The UK government has a database of home insurance details?"

Him: "Yes, we need to update it"

Me (getting bored now): "Tell you what, give me your number and I'll call the details in when I've got a minute"

Him: "We need to update our database"

<goes round in circles a bit longer, until...>

Him: "We don't have any incoming 'phone lines"

Me: "The UK government doesn't have any incoming 'phone lines?"

    Him: "No"

Me (thoroughly bored now): "Thank you for your call; goodbye!"

Picks up wife who is a giggling heap on the floor by now.

I've missed all of my own calls, but as a PC engineer, I was lucky enough to be at a customer's when they rang and I had a 15-minute argument with them about ripping people off.

Then today I got a phonecall:

    "Hello, Newport Computers"

""Hi, I've just had a phone call from Virgin Media saying they've detected signals that my PC's files are corrupt, can you fix it?"

    "Yep, I just have"

    "Sorry?"

"I've fixed it. There is no way your ISP knows what the state of your PC is, if they say they can they're liars, so I guess it wasn't Virgin Media but a scam, don't worry about it. Have you noticed any problems with the PC? Slowing down? Anything out of the ordinary?"

    "No, it's been fine"

"Right, well don't worry about it. Obviously make sure your antivirus package is up to date and don't reply to any suspicious emails or phonecalls, but otherwise you'll be fine. You might want to call Virgin Media and ask them if it was their staff who rang you, 'cos they'll probably want to alert other people if there's a scam going round"

"...OK, so can you come and fix these corrupt files?"

"No, that's what I'm saying - there are no corrupted files, don't worry - if everything's working OK, just relax, they're trying to scare you into spending money you don't need to spend. It happens a lot, they claim to be from Microsoft or from your ISP - it's a fake."

"Right, well if you're not going to help me I think I'll ring someone else, thank you."

""I'm trying to help you - honestly, I deal with this all the time, it's a hoax, there is nothing to fix, I promise you. I mean if you're really still worried I can call in and take a look to reassure you but honestly, I'm trying to save you some money."

    *caller hangs up*

There is truly no helping some people.

    Nope.

The real shame is that scammers will continue to make money when they know there are people out there like that...

Whats the best way to stop these phone calls, today i've had another one,. claiming to be from microsoft windows and his a windows technician. lol, he didnt like it when i told him theres nothing wrong with my computer, and that i was the main and only user, also the fact that i have disable the outgoing messages/logs that would be sent.
I also told him to remove my name, number etc from whatever list he was using. he put the phone down.
I really would like to stop these phone calls, but it seems the only way i can is to change my phone number, Virginmedia cant/wont do anything about this i've phoned them they did however suggest phoning a company to stop it, which i did, and signed up free of charge, but as you can tell they didnt do a thing. So people any other suggestions besides changing my phone number
small note: I'm supposed to be EX-directory
