Welcome too Moneyspider, I'm doing the same thing too. I'm on my last day at work (finish at 12.00 and counting the minutes) and will be aiming to bring enough funds in through booting, selling on eBay and any other way to ensure I don't have to work 9-5 any more. I will probably have to do some part time work or even temporary work from time to time but the aim is to minimise that as much as possible. I love crafting too but have found that there isn't such a huge market for it as second hand goods. I'd also like to get a range of new products that will sell on a relatively constant basis.
Will be great to hear your progress too. Good luck.

Wow are you giving up work to consentrate on this, or was work coming to an end anyway?
Ive just realised its now past 12, so your a free woman :T

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone :T

Yes I'm free now. Slightly scarey! I had come to the end of development in my job and there wasn't any future for me within the company. I rent out rooms in my house so have a certain amount of long term regular income coming in so it's not quite as brave as it seems. I've wondered for years what I want to do and I think (hope) the answer is that I want to be my own boss. My daughter's grown up and lives elsewhere so I have limited risk.

I've always loved selling, starting when my parents owned a weaving business back in the 80's. I used to go around all the craft fairs selling and showing people how to spin. I was a sales rep/manager for quite a few years but it was always for someone else.

Like most people I want to simplify my life - I've a large allotment which will keep me busy when I'm not buying/selling. Summer is on the way.... What more can I say?

Most of all my family, partner and friends are all very supportive of this change in lifestyle for me so that makes it easier. I like working hard and think that I will work harder for myself than others just to ensure this "dream" works.

It's really interesting how people arrive at certain points in their lives - what about others on this thread - how have you got to this point?

ClippertyThanks for that info re ebay searches - i have done that before but sort of forgotten about it so thanks for the reminder - it is scary how much people pay for toys at times!!

Katrss7Well the day has come :D it must feel exciting as well as scary to be free of the 9-5 :D

My story goes something along the lines of i have ALWAYS wanted to work for myself and i have dipped my toe in to manys an opportunity over the years. I started making things at a really young age and by the time i was 17 i was selling jewellery in shops and supplying the local craft store - I did that at the same time as working with elderly people. I was diagnosed with severe depression at the age of 18 and took medication for 10 years which ultimately affected my creativity and drive. Once i was well enough to work again i got very interested in mental health in general, started working as a temp in that field and progressed to managing 2 services for people with schizophrenia, bi polar and severe depression. I did a degree in psychology, a masters in substance misuse and an advanced diploma in counselling and was planning on opening my own counselling service.

Unfortunately i had some health problems a few years ago and was admitted to hospital with a suspected ruptured cyst on my ovary. I have just found out a few months ago that this put me into early menopause (i'm 40) and that along with particularly unsupportive employers caused a complete relapse of my mental health condition (which i have been under treatment for now for almost 3 years). I lost my job due to ill health and because of how i was treated by a mental health organisation and my ongoing mental health issues i can't see myself going back into that type of work again.

I do want to try and get myself into a situation where i can work again, but i need something flexible enough to allow for the major mood changes i go through on a monthly basis. So i am dipping my toes into the working for myself realms once again as its the only way i can imagine being able to work again at the minute. I am still on very shaky ground with my mental and physical health - i only found out about the early menopause as i asked to be referred to the fertility clinic - i have no children and wanted to discuss my options as i only have one ovary now. I also just found out 2 weeks ago i now have osteoporosis in my hips because of the early menopause. I have had my medication increased yet again for my mental health last week and had my HRT doubled at the same time as it wasn't doing anything at all to my hormone levels etc. I am trying hard to work through it all, but its a bit of a mess as you can imagine.

To be honest i am really just in the playing with ideas stage and trying to create some form of employment options for the future in my head. I just need to find something else now as everything i was aiming for and trained for suddenly was no longer an option.

Sorry for the long post - its rather hard to summarise all that information! Oh and i'm a terrible waffle :rotfl::rotfl:

  • Gosh ((((Fairyclicks)))) thats a lot to be dealing with, hopfully you will find a solution that works for you soon :)

Katrss, it is scarey but exciting at the same time i think :)
for me i really should of done this years ago, i think whats spurred me on to do it now is the realisation that at 35 the only jobs i feel i can apply for and have a chance of getting are pretty dire.
ive mostly been a SAHM, although i was self employed for 5 years has a slimming world consultant, i really loved that job and was successful with my group, they are a great company to work with and i cant praise them enough, massive scope to progress with them. Unfortunately ive also suffered depression on and off for years, although not to the extent fairyclicks discribes.
My dad passed away suddenly in spain, he lived there with his wife, she had him cremated the next day without telling anyone :( the family i have from my dads side never really had anything to do with me, without dragging this story out, basically my grandad changed his will, so the third that should off gone to my dad, now was to be split between me and my step brother and step sister, grandad died within a few months of my dad, and thats when the $&it hit the fan has they say, my 2 uncles didnt want to give us our share of my grandads will, this dragged on for almost 2 years  it was a truelly awful time, the first time i'd realised how evil people can be when money is involved, it was hard enough losing dad in such a way, and then grandad, but the aftermath really got me down so much so i didnt feel i could continue with my consulting job so put in my notice, i couldn't support my group when i was struggling to support myself. The day after i took my last group, a cheque arrived in the post for £22,000 :o, unfortunately with my state of mind and also a strange sense of guilt that the money should of been my dads not mine, i'd gambled most of it away within 3 months ..i'd been gambling a little before the money came, nothing crazy. I KNOW I KNOW....Madness!

Basically Gambling is why im in debt, once i'd started and lost so much, i started chasing the losses and wiped out a 5 grand overdraft

I dont gamble now, and its not for me to say anything to anyone else, but i do worry when theres lots of talk on the 10 day thread about bingo bonuses ect, my tale of woe all started with a free £5 bonus :(

    Opps...i also suffer wafflitis :rotfl:

Yes back to why now?...for me it just makes sense to, im passionate about vintage, collectables and quirky, its never a chore getting up at 4am on a sunday morning to hit the carboots, its time to turn that passion into profit :D

Yes i hate listing, but not has much as i hate tin twiddling ( self stacking! )

Ive got nothing to lose, we dont get benefits, so its not like i'll be losing out there.
Its not going to take a large amount of cash to get up and running.
I'll keep shelf stacking on the nightshift until my contacts up, 12 weeks time, that should clear the last of my overdraft and then some.

    :):):)

Thanks MoneySpider! (((hugs))) to you too :) I am getting there slowly but surely i think :)

Sorry to hear about your Dad and Grandad!! Its really horrible all the nonsense that comes about after a will isn't it?? so many people fall out over it and seem to forget the important part which is the loss of someone close to them! :(

Thanks for sharing your gambling story - Although i have been using the bingo sites i am very very careful on them and i agree wholeheartedly with what you have said about the £10 thread - bit scary sometimes :eek: I can make £2 stretch out all week and just have a little bit of fun with it and have been lucky enough to have some good winnings - think i am a free bingo tart cos i know when they are all on :rotfl::rotfl: Think i'm just too mean to gamble much of actual money :rotfl::rotfl:

Its great that so many of us all have a similar idea about using this thread and moving our lives forward into a new chapter :D maybe we will all become bootie millionaires by this time next year :D:D who knows??

I am considering going to the local bootie today for a nosey......but i have so much stuff in the house already i am really having to control myself! Of course doing a bootie again would be the best plan - maybe one of these weeks i will feel up to it :)

Right on to the dreaded fleabay with me now - i am challenging myself to get 100 things listed over the weekend :rotfl: wish me luck ;)

Hope you all have a brilliant day, and look forward to hearing about your purchases and sales :D xxxx

Fairyclicks and Moneyspider - hugs to you both and thanks for sharing your stories. I'm not sure the mantra that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger is correct but I can see strength in both of you the way you're fighting back from such awful experiences.

I'm frozen.... I've been at a bootie from 7am this morning and have raised £42 but my word I'm cold. My car says it's 10 degrees but I feel the cold through to my bones. I've got a hot cup of tea and my fingers are thawing slowly. Typing is helping. Not such a good day today - we didn't have much electrical/computer stuff and that's what sells. Have made a big purchase which we collect tomorrow which should have some good things in otherwise I'm left with the rubbish.

It would be great to recycle some of the stuff that's left but perhaps I'll think about that later. Woke at 4 am today and haven't been back to sleep. I'm probably "ov-er ex-cited" (as my partner says) about finishing work thinking about all my plans.

Hugs to everyone today and send some back please to warm me up! x

£41.08 today from eBay clearing me out of one stock line. Unfortunately cannot get more supplies.

Still feeling the effects of the cold yesterday but hopefully as I get fitter (from not sitting at a computer 9-5 each day) it will get easier.

What a beautiful day today - good luck with your selling everyone.
