Well, old girl went. Very quickly, it was really good as these things go. I am very content with the situation.
Plus we finally found a fencer who is getting back to us with dates. Now to source the surface. We really wanted to go sand less with deeper rubber. Is not such a great surface but saves sand in the house (prevailing wind is from that's direction) and all around the yard.
But I am too chicken to stick to my guns, so will be looking for cheapest silica sand soon I guess, and whatever rubber topping we go for. Not sure whether to add fibre to the sand mix. It's so complicated! My ideal surface is quite 'dead' and turfy, rather than springy and bouncy, (which is the problem with rubber).
There are so many options. And they are all expensive!0 -

If they wanted to shoot they should have bought or rented somewhere suitable themselves.
There are gun clubs around & some farmers allow shooting on their land but I'd be very loathe to start letting under 14s loose with any form of firearm on my land - particularly if I didn't know the family really well.
I know about the regs, but the above sums it up better. We now have no 3rd party insurance, as we did when selling plants here and inviting people in.
There's a gun club just up the road, and I bet they wouldn't have 6 year olds on the premises, with their Dad or not. Similar reasons.0 -

That's a mercy :A and it's good you are looking to the future now, even if every option is expensive.0 -

Yes.
There is a tremendous sense of relief. Like when an access finally erupts _pale_. It's not she is gone, but the pressure of waiting for her to go has been huge.
Tbh, I know we will never again care for a horse like her that reaches its forties still in work but that's fine too!0 -
lir. Glad her going went well.
I had not realised that she was quite that old. She must have been a real toughie. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

The toughest I have met. We last rode her (or rather a lightweight friend of mine did) summer before last. I wanted her to go just to the end of the road and back but old girl was furious about turning and coming back.. Most horses rush for home but old girl was trying to turn to go further..

Omg I just went to the door and got the most beautiful bunch of flowers for the old girl sent from a dear friend. Surely reading this thread!
What a lovely thing to happen! They smell outrageously good, thanks Alfie. Xxx0 -

We already take the spare chipping here for the barn, but its not enough, and yes, they rot down too quickly for an outdoor surface, i love them as an indoor surface though. I'd be redoing it outdoors here every year.0
