Sorry to hear about old girl, LIR
Welcome agreenmess.
Sorry, I'm with the others as far as there being times when not culling can be the easy but very cruel option.
Still struggling with the rib (& the ruddy weather) so still nothing worth reporting from here.0 -
Lir, sad news on old girl.
Greenmess, welcome.
Itsme, sorry to hear that rib is taking its time to heal, must be a real bind
Nothing happening outside in this rain, apart from the slugs and snails having a field day and the soil moisture levels getting a top up!

You have given old girl extra time while she can still enjoy it.
Hard to let her go much better now than to wait until she falls? If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

Exactly.
I am sure now that time left would be painful. It's a blessing she has come so far with no evidence of feeling pain. But it's time to say good bye now. I don't really regret that. The last few months have been very hard, but I am glad she has had them.:)0 -

Is it ok if I join in, I've been wanting a lovely little smallholding for the last 6 years, nothing big as I only want Chickens, no killing on my smallholding! I'm looking at the moment for the perfect place to buy till then I have my new allotment (got it a couple of months ago!) which I have to get up to more. Just need something to push me to be more self-sufficient/homestead-iein preparation
Hi Agreenmess:j:j
I Totally agree with what peeps have said about livestock.. even if you only have a few chickens, At some point you will either have to dispatch the chicken yourself or pay a vet a vast amount of money to do it....it would be cruel not too.
But this will be a little while down the road, but it will be something to bare in mind...
Well done on managing to get an allotment...:beer:
At the moment I have a broody turkey:rotfl: we let her out with the chickens, thinking the change would put her off, but nope, she is sitting on the chicken eggs now:rotfl::rotfl:Work to live= not live to work0 -

What a fabulous life you have given her and she made it through to the lovely spring weather and fresh grass. I know it will be hard, and we will all be thinking of you.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
Not in the same league, but I've ended the struggle for dear Rosie. As if in sympathy, the heavens opened; our first rain today.
Now it's cleared the birds are singing their hearts out. Knowing how many blackbirds we have, I'm amazed we still have a few worms left for the moles.
Like Rummer, I'll be wishing you strength tomorrow.0 -

Yes, they're gone and good riddance, though I'm sure that they meant well. The correspondence I had from them suggested they weren't too bright.
Still, no need to be Einstein to set up a business breeding animals, but not a good idea if you are new to the whole thing.
I'm still learning about sheep. Today I put an extra strand of wire above the sheep netting on the far side of the orchard which divides our two fields. I've now confined the sheep to the lower field so that we can grow hay on the upper one. I'm hoping that if they jump into the orchard again they'll not jump out the other side! We'll see.
Also took a sack along the roadside to pick up any rubbish along our boundary hedge. Although it didn't look too bad out there, I almost filled it in 250m. :mad:0 -
BIG HUGS LIR ....
you know / knew when the time was right. she couldnt have had a more loving "mummy".0
