I'll be totally honest. I am just not feeling the dream at all ATM. If we got an offer that met what we had spent more or less so far I'd go. Like a shot.

Problem is, half way through the job we have devalued it. :(. ATM I don't want another animal ever, and the garden is no fun in this weather.

I am sure its just a long slog because of the frustrations with heating/ health/ weather/ bereavement and I don't miss city living, but a three room shack in the woods sounds nice...no garden, just trees.

Tbh, if I don't buck up soon I'll start to worry a bit. It's been a year where the sun seems to have been rare figuratively as well as in reality.

Oh LIR you really have had a dreadful run of things recently and my heart goes out to you. I hope things turn a corner for you soon.

Phew it is an interesting discussion to have in relation to house prices and what to do for the best. When we bought our current home we took a lower price (still a profit) on our previous place as we were ready to move and our perfect (at that time) property just happened to come on the market.

We were lucky as this was all just before the big crash. Now we are kind of stuck here but at least we love it and are happy here, many of our friends are trapped in less than ideal places.

For us taking a hit worked out well in the end and we have never regretted in, however every situation is different and it sounds itsme as if it is not too desperate for you atm and that you can afford to wait for the right circumstances.

Financially I can wait but the really hard part is the extremely restricted lifestyle since I can no longer wrap myself up & venture out in all weathers. I've been out twice since 23rd March ...... both times to the doctors :rotfl:

    :D. Me too.

On the plus side I found out I don't have to have a rubella vaccination as at some point in the last ten years I have contracted rubella without noticing and now have antibodies.

On the rough side ....I have a code of lumps. I have known about them for a while and tbh, just pretended they weren't there. The eye thing last year was too much. It's no longer really avoidable and I am seeing a gp about it soon. I don't think they can blame this on my brain though!:D

I realise we were in a totally different price bracket and we still are.

However, the only questions that mattered to us were:

Can we afford what we want if we sell now?
Can we survive on what we'll have left?

The answers to those questions were 'Yes' so we sold.
Yes, it's tight, and we may fail to get this place how we'd like it, or have nothing left as a buffer, but we are no worse off than the majority of folk on these islands.

I wasn't really making a point about the difference in price brackets, Dave. I apologise if it came over that way.

It is hard to explain if someone hasn't come across the same problem. The only way I can think to put it is (& this doesn't take into account the lack of mortgages available for mixed use which means looking for cash buyers) would you have sold at half the valuation because nobody was buying anything above that particular price in your area & would you still have been able to do what you wanted to do? In my case the answer is no.

Oh LIR :( It's a !!!!! when poor health gets in the way &, oh boy, does the constant cold & damp drag one down. Being poorly only makes these things more noticeable. Your health is the most important thing. I hope the doc sorts you out - in the best meaning of the phrase. Some warm sunshine for more than the odd day would do you wonders, I'm sure. I know it would for me.

Hum , the best meaning of the phrase might leave dh a little cross with the doctor and me ;):D

But it might cheer me up:eek:

Actually I feel a lot better for just admitting it tbh. :o. * I am not unappreciative of my many, many lucks in life. It feels wrong to feel not joyous about them pretty much all the time. But I know realistically that's not possible.

*admitting the stress that is, not admitting to anything with the gp. No siree. Not me and the doctor. Nope, nope, nope.

No need for apologies. The price bracket is relevant because there are far fewer people in yours, making things harder. I get that.

We wouldn't have sold at 50% off, but everyone has their own sticking point. We got a bit creative, selling part of the garden separately, otherwise we'd not have sold at that moment.

Indeed, we were close to doing what you did and pulling the place off the market.

For us: the answer to the first question is yes, the answer to the second one is it depends on what we sell at. So it's not clear cut. Plus, we're just into the 3% bracket so people want to get their money's worth (understandable). Other houses within a mile or two of here, of comparable size, are on the market at 300k+ so I think we're a good deal. But I'm not in the market to buy another one :rotfl:

LIR It does a person good to offload when things are getting too much. I do appreciate the good things in my life however they do not make the horrid things less horrid or make them go away.

I couldn't have answered those questions, anyway, as I don't know.

Our plan was to a) have a nice long holiday (I will find some bl**dy sun even if I have to chase it round Europe by train :rotfl: - I can't fly) & then come home & rent while we look for somewhere. I'm not even entirely sure of what area I'd like so renting, which I've always done between homes, seems even more sensible. What I could or couldn't afford would depend on where & what, if you see what I mean.

To be truthful, as I feel right now, I'm not even sure I'd bother to buy anywhere ever again. I quite like the idea of being able to say "That's it. I'm off" & move on to fresh pastures as & when I fancy. :D
That's much easier to do from rental as my current situation proves. :o
