Good news FK.
I'm not selling hardly any eggs at the gate. It is disappointing.
I wish I hadn't got the extra hens now.
People are fickle when it comes to eggs. Just getting them to stop the car is half the battle. Having had others' eggs in winter, I know I'd go out of my way to buy ones like ours.
Luckily, we have one lady who will take any surplus, but some new customers have come along now, so there isn't one currently.
The trouble is, people can get snooty if they find you've run out. One lady who hadn't placed a regular order did, even though we said we'd get her some for the following day: "Oh, don't worry, I'll just get some in town."
I felt like yelling, "It's a fresh, natural product, you daft bint!" in classic John Cleese style.
And now I shall complain of the very same thing, having done a round trip to Barnstaple, where S**burys were virtually out of our favourite rolls and several other fresh items at 3pm. OK, I know it's a Wednesday afternoon but how do people who work ever manage to buy these items?
Sad about your hens.:( As the 'dispatcher' here, I've had a quiet time lately. Long may it continue!0 -
......I would have thought with all my wonderful black lambs gamboling about folks would have been really tempted to pull in, but doesn't seem to.
I end up giving the eggs away which is all a bit self defeating.
I know someone who tried to get a restaurant interested in organic chicken as she was geared up with slaughtering house, certificates - all legit & the restaurant was always saying how they were into fair trade. local produce etc. They said they would be prepared to take the chicken breasts but nothing else! When you have to explain why that isn't an option you're wasting your breath really.0 -

Alfie, Dad will be fighting back against the infection and getting tired by it. Things like that often seem at their worst just before turning the corner. Lets hope he's soon on the road to recovery.
Choille, that's good to hear about the window, and the lambs of course, but proper windows are more exciting. Lidl's fishing tackle looked pretty good to me for the price. Most of what they were selling would be illegal to use in these parts. :rotfl:
Glorious day, which we will pay for with another frost. :(Nevertheless, got the first pole concreted in to be the starting point for our fruit cage.
A few weeks ago, I made another level for our nest boxes. At last, hens have started using it. As you can see from the picture, it features a communal area, as we've found some of the hens like egg laying together, rather than privately.
I love this :T
Is it staggered like stairs? And what's it made out of?0 -

It's mostly plywood, screwed & glued together, and it's a bit staggered. The main thing is that there are perching ledges along the front, but I may make a ladder to the top level for our less agile hens. Most of them can fly, though.
There has to be a sloping roof, or some would go up there to roost. Under the roof makes a good place to store things like jars of corn etc.
The other improvement we've made to the hen house is to add a poo catcher made of vinyl flooring under each of the perches. This is taken out every two days at this time of year, hung on the fence and hosed clean. Most of the mess the birds make is under the perches, so doing this greatly reduces the amount of wood shavings used: we are probably getting through only 1/3 of the amount previously used. With wood flakes at over £8 a bag, that's a real saving.0
