would feeding this do any harm to the pigs?
If the answere is no to all of the above, we have a few micro breweries around here, so thought I might ask for some to see if the piggies like it.
Our local brewery gives away spent hops which can be used as mulch or compost feed. My hop based compost heap is getting quite warm now. They can also be fed to cows, apparently they love them. Spent hops certainly smell, very lemony. I presume the spent malt is also a waste product, although the local brewery do not give that away. As I understand it, the fermentation takes place after the spent hops and malt are discarded. So your wee piggies will not get tiddly.
They also give away used plastic 25L containers, which could be converted into growing pots, or made into a raised bed by grouping them together. Come to think of it, they could also be made into cloches. I wonder how the tops can be cut off? The plastic is rather thick.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0 -
The lamb hasn't been ringed, but could still be.
It is the farmer's lamb & isn't finders keepers. He must have been breeding it for a tup otherwise it would have been ringed. He has offered them money & really they are daft taking it to court - sure they could get another lamb, an orphan quite easily.
One Hebredian lambed this morning so that's a nice thing. A big lamb - the singles seem to be, but they are small sheep really.
Not too bad a day, but feel a bit tired. Not many bids on things.....could do with a money injection as looks like I'll need more hay as there's no grass. Thought I had bought ample, but really been getting through it & the pellets.
CTC - The micro brewery here keeps pigs & they feed the waste - most folks try & get it for feed, so there will be a Q ahead of you I would think-possibly.
Another coffee me thinks........0 -
Well I finally made it into the garden yesterday :j however I achieved very little
A bit of weeding was done, some pots topped up and that was it :rotfl: however it was a start and we are welcoming some friends tomorrow who are going to help in the garden too
I love hearing about random businesses helping each other, never would I have thought of breweries aiding pig farmers!
All the lambing chat has started me thinking that it is almost fleece prep time, I have a few that need to be sorted, cleaned and combed ready for some summer spinning. At the moment I have alpaca, Charollais and two mystery fleeces all waiting to be prepped and made into wonderful thingsTaking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -

Wow you have managed to do so much! I on the other hand have just been out in the garden and have got myself so overwhelmed that I just don't know where to start
Every single area needs work and I need to just pick an area and get stuck in but my eye keeps wandering and then I go and work on something else for a little while and then repeat that until I have spent my time walking to and fro and getting nothing of value done.
A trip to the garden centre is needed as I have just put a hole in my gardening gloves and we need wood stain and greenhouse glass as the greenhouse has oodles of panes missing so there is little point in planting anything in it until they are fixed. Wild rocket has taken its grip in there too and the whole place needs a scrub.
The back garden is over run with creeping buttercups and they have taken over most of the grass which is really vexing  not to mention they cover the paths and loads of the beds too
I need to just start working!!!!!!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
Rummer, it can get a bit overwhelming which is why a bit of help is much appreciated. Generally I believe in little and often so it doesnt get too much, but when my back was bad last year I bit the bullet and paid for a guy to do all the catch up work, which meant I could then manage the day to day maintenance.
Dont get me wrong, still a lot to do here0 -
Rummer I ha this book, and then sold it, but as you can see its basically saying do 1/2 hour a day/timehttp://www.amazon.co.uk/Half-hour-Allotment-Royal-Horticultural-Society/dp/0711226059/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1366471079&sr=1-1&keywords=half+hour+allotment#_
which is basically saying a little and often, and you will get alot more done over timeWork to live= not live to work0
