The snow was wild here this morning and then by evening there was not a sign of it at all. I really do not like the stuff, unless I am gazing at it out the window with no need to travel
Planting seeds at the weekend has really lifted my spirits, I know they may not make it to the garden however I feel full of glee every time I look at the seed trays sitting at the top of the stairs. They are just bursting with potential!
The garden is also looking better after our wee tidy up and I have started to think and plan and scheme as to what I can grow and do to my garden this year, oh the joy!!!! The raspberries have come out from under the fence relatively unscathed which is good as hubby is not keen for them to be moved this yearlooks like I will have to wait longer for my flower bed.
I am going to expand my herb garden this year and I am open to suggestionsso far we have:
- Mint
- Sage
- Rosemary
- Thyme
- Chives
- Curry plant
- Lavender
- Basil (indoors)
- Marjoram
- Tarragon
We have different types of some of these but I am looking for inspiration. Interesting and unusual herbs would be greatTaking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
Some others I used to have in my herb garden were:
Bay (OK - expensive but should last for years)
Bergamot
Borage (be careful it self seeds like mad)
Chamomile
Chervil
Coriander
Dill
Fennel
Hyssop
Lemon balm
Lovage (grows to an enormous height so put it somewhere you can provide support)
Oregano
Parsley (flat & curly)
Rue (careful, it can be a skin irritant)
Salad burnet
Winter & summer savory
Sorrel
& the stuff with the furry leaves used for coughs :rotfl: The name escapes me at the moment but it will surface eventually
Edit: Horehound!Knew it was in the old memory somewhere.
Don't go for wormwood (absinthe) a) it stinks & b) is another one that is invasive.
There were others (I had over 50 sorts) but I can't remember any more at the moment. If I do I'll let you know.0 -
Itsme, I have been looking a lot at bergamot recently. I want some!
What about angelica? I remember this in a garden as a child and my mother candling it. I liked the look of it.
I want to plant herbs!!!0 -
Yes, of course, angelica. It's another tall one needing support.
Then, of course, there's things like horseradish. I used to grow it in a vertical length of pipe to keep it fairly straight
Garlic - I always had more joy with the wild sort (ramsoms) but then it grows along the hedgerows here so must like the area.0 -
I've several books on herbs so I can give a fairly definitive list if anyone wants one.
The books are in the study & I'm too tired (read too bl&&dy lazy) to root them out tonight but yell if you think I might be able to help more.

Got sooo much on my plate at the mo.... and alot of head work, its making me feel ill and physically sick:o
Never mind hopefully over the next few months things will settle down..
well done on the quick sale of the collar box::T
I should be listing things, but i have 101 things on the go, or on my mind at mo, so I would prob post late, and get crap feed back, so not worth the risk.
Rhiwie If you want to come over and have a look at the boxes of bric-a-brac it might be worth you coming over in the next week or so...will pm you later.
Right better go and get ready for work:oWork to live= not live to work0 -
Any one else got the kind of morning when the sun is pouring over anting and you are inspired to clean the windows....well, almost! I would but I have other stuff to do today.0

Not here -it's mostly grey and drizzly.
Alfie - you're worrying me now :rotfl::rotfl:Back to work on Tuesday so it could be that I'll find it restful! I trust you though "...And if it don't feel good, what are you doing it for?" - Robbie Williams - 'Candy'0 -
What is it with pigeons? Just nearly had heart attack as one flew into the living room window!
It's a through room, so guess it thought it could fly straight through and out the front window! :rotfl: Saw it fly off, so must have a thick skull!
Lovely sunny day here, got up to 76F in the porch! Have been sitting out there for my cigstoday as there's chilly northerly blowing in on back of house. OH has picked up another rotten cold, from the timing my guess is he picked it up when he went to the hospital to pick up MiL last Friday. He's still in bed, which is most unlike him.
Yesterday was sitting out the back and looking for first signs of spring. The snowdrops are in bud, and the pink flowers (name escapes me) on bush are out, oh, and the winter flowering jasmine. And hellebore flowers showing buds too. No sign of the garlic yet, hope it hasn't rotted in all the wet. Last year we had the first flower on the early camellia open on New Years Day. This year it's still all in tight buds. No sign of any crocuses yet, they may have died as we didn't weed out the grass from them last year. But daffodil leaves showing under the crab apple. Hoping Spring starts springing a bit more soon!
Ornamental quince in front had a solitary flower open around Christmas, but a lot of buds showing pink now... One of these years we'll be organised enough to use the fruits!0
