    wet and damp here.

just come back from the auction....

    VERY mixed views...

large pigs .... the prices were very low...

weaners.... no runty looking ones, and they all brought £20+ except some little kune kune piglets that went for between £1 - £5..

I cant see why they put this type of pig into farm/meat type of auctions..????

If there are any there the next time we are buying, I might take a punt and buy some, and then advertise them in smallholding ads etc....I am sure I could make some sort of profit on them, or if not SAUSAGES:D:o

spoke to one or two fo the old timers there, and they said they have noticed alot of gilts of bredding age being sold over the last 6 - 8 months, which were going for meat, as the price of feed is going up....fingers crossed if we can keep and expand our cheap fruit/veg feed then there might be a chance we could make some sort of profit...

Its all going to be trial and error, win some, lose some so to speak, but there is still a good market out there, its just finding a profitable route to it

    rozee.

It is still worth planting; you may not lose the fruit anyway; you can always just throw a net over the ripening bushes (old net curtains look naff but work well IME) and even if that does not work your bushes will be well established by the time the children get to school.

I would be more worried about the patter of slightly larger feet and the impact of half a dozen little hands.

Just thinking that squirrels could be a useful food source and wild farmed a bit like the old rabbit warrens.

Its easy to net soft fruit while it ripens, a fruit cage is not essential and netting is quite cheap to protect against blackbirds.
Okay, you guys have given me renewed hope. the children would eat a lorry load of soft fruit every day if we could afford it! I love it too and the raspberry bush that we bought from Costco about 3 or 4 years ago has been so prolific, I have been really motivated by that.

Dave can I please have that link again for the fruit tree nursery....? I saved it somewhere, but I can't remember where :o
Rozee what are you using as bait in the squirrel traps?

the little s&ds should be flipping sleeping the winter away, but they are still running riots in my roof:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Pig auction tomorrow down in carmarthen, might go and see what is being sold at this time of the year, and prices etc.

was hoping that the fencing guy would have got back to us and got the fencing done by now, so will have to leave another message.
The squirrel has trapped us about 6 squirrels by now. It was hilarious when we caught the birds. OH was so crestfallen and the birds were none too pleased. He now puts it near the bird feeder, ut has set it so that it's not too sensitive and I think he's just baiting it with the bird feed. They seem keen enough on it. I have a few squirrel proof feeders with cages around them but I picked up some super cheap filled ones on sale and put them up before we went on our travels as the birds would have been without food for a while if I hadn't. When we returned, these non-squirrel proof ones, three plastic ones (Garder? Can't recall the brand) had all been chewed through and the squirrels had had a feast. We soon got our own back a few hours later as they are so used to coming to the bird table for a beano.

As for eating them. OH reports they are really manky with all sorts of horrible warts on their hands and underbelly.... It's really turned my stomach for squirrel pie, although we might reconsider if we were desperate!

    Are you OK?
It is awful. Even the flags are slippery at the moment & they don't even have mud on.

    Yes, Alfie where are youuuuuuuuu?!

Yes, I am ok. Seem to have sprained a hand, and maybe one foot but not sure. My feet are sweeling in protest at the shock (my feet are prone to swelling anyway) and I have caught a nerve in the left shoulder. And I broke a nail :rotfl:

I'll be fine in the morning I hope.

The geese are sitting in the middle of the pond looking a bit awed at themselves and a bit scared. Dh is coming home tonight so he says he will paddle in on Alfie's Icing (his canoe) and shoo them out.

Itsme, there was me thinking all the dance exercise was doing you good!

May be high pressure over us atm but its murky and drizzly here, bit of sun would be welcome

If anyone hasnt seen the episode of Natures weird events with Chris Packham where the polar bear starts to go for the tied up huskies, make sure you watch it. Just amazing!!

Do you have any comfrey? Really good for reducing the impact of sprians and bruises. Stains like hell though so wear old socks and use another to cover your hand in bed..

It is for general fitness (heart, lungs etc) but it takes it's toll on the 'framework'.

Sounds like you have the same mucky weather as us. I'm not surprised as it didn't look much cop over your side when we were 'up top' earlier.
It was quite strange today - no birdsong up there - when the breeze dropped & there were no cars around it was eerily still. Rather like it goes before a bad storm. People mistakenly think the countryside is peaceful but, when it is, it's usually bad news.

LIR - Can't give health tips but I'm sure you'll know the "above the hip/don't stand still" rule. Cold pack?

Hope the geese have come in by now. I've often found that the fowl will make their own minds up when they think it's bedtime. They'll often come in later by themselves unless something has scared them in their pen.
