Mum in Law went for gastroscopy today, they found she has 3 small ulcers in duodenum and also thrush too far down her oesophagus to be seen by doctor normally. All treatable with drugs, and then she'll have another gastroscopy mid Jan to check all is clear. OH left at 7.45 this morning and isn't back yet. Next thing to organise is some kind of heart check at GPs, if that's OK it's the Memory Clinic next! So no gardening, though we have done a little bit more old home clearing. Need to get out in the yard there and tidy it up a bit too, it's a very green space with lots and lots of plants despite its small size. Will bring some of the big flower planters back to new home I expect. On returning home from visiting MiL on Sunday found a Tweet telling me I've won £30 of seeds from SeedParade in a blog give away! :j So will have some fun over the next few days choosing what to indulge in! ;):)

We've been watching Jamie Oliver's 15 minute meals, have tried several and liked them, so OH has bought the book. He does use a lot of chilli though, which to be honest I'm not that keen on. But I think I could manage a small kick from a mild one, so wondered if any of you Chilli aficionados could give me some advice as to what kind to try and grow next year? I've noticed Jamie biting into chillies to check how hot they are, but it's not something I fancy trying!

Sorry, forgot to welcome new folks to the thread! Good to have some new blood arriving, I'm sure you'll all have plenty to entertain us all with!

Actually, this could help me too. My new pills make anything peppery or spicy very much more magnified, unpleasantly so, so some of my favourite things which have a bit of chilli in them are not so nice to me ATM.. I have been thinking I just go, much, much less.
  • I'm so pleased to hear that MiL is getting sorted at last, maggie.
    Congratulations on the win, too.
Sorry, I can't help with the chillies as I steer clear of them where possible. It's not that I don't like them just that they often don't seem to like me :o
Much the same with most spicey things so I've always tended to rely on lots of different herbs instead.

turned out it was the spicy food...even now if i get a hint of chilli i go down hill rapidly. i have to try before i buy when im in morocco ! and elsewhere.
trouble is people say "no, no spices" and there bl**dy well is... then they say [when im writhing in agony] "well not many".....:rotfl::cool:

ive cleaned all the chooks out at friends today and son has been chainsawing the wood from felled pine trees there too. then he split them all and stacked them. made me exhausted watching him !!:D

Glad to hear MiL is finally getting a thorough check over, Maggie. :)

As regards chillies, Jalapenos are normally quite mild, and not bitter if you pick them a bit early, when they'll be milder still. They make compact plants.

I also like 'Bishop's Hat' (sometimes called Bishop's Crown or similar) which are a little tougher in cold conditions and have "wings" that can be nibbled to check the heat. They make larger plants than Jalapenos.

For new varieties, look for plants that originate from the Mexican Chilli Institute, which has introduced many in recent years.

All chillies are milder at the bottom and hotter around the shoulder.

Don't use the seeds, which are the hottest part of all.

It's best to wear rubber gloves when preparing chillies too. ;)

I'm the same with spicy food, cant have anything too spicy now as it plays havoc :o

DS1 flew back to NZ and got upgraded to business for treating an in-flight patient. One advantge of being an ER doctor :D. And someone watching over DD2 as semi-detached house next door caught fire but smoke alarms gave everyone chance to get out without harm and fire brigade there in 3 mins so very little property damage. GSs most impressed with flashing lights and firemen :D

Warming up after sub-zero auction today, spent the most ever and distinctly underwhelmed with buys atm (usual post auction triste) sub zero being the most likely outcome . Now own a bit of Nantgarw (including staples:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:)

I see that more of you have creepy buttercups, I really hate them (as I am sure I have mentioned before ;)) They are all over our garden and the Fiskars gadget coupled with a lot of determination every year are required to keep them out of the veggie beds.

We have never really had much luck growing chillies but every year we have been lucky to get one dripping with chillies from the local garden center for pennies at the end of the season :D

This evening I am going to read about potatoes.
Taking responsibility one penny at a time!

    Whatever turns you on.....:D

Last night we had the first read-through of the Panto. I'm happy with my role. It's clear that I was chosen as Queen Victoria for my voice, not my stature. :p

Just had one of our eggs for breakfast. They're still in very short supply, but truly, they can't be beaten. :)

A kind person sent me some Yacon on Monday, First class. I am still waiting. Lets hope they haven't been sitting around somewhere in freezing temperatures. :(

I have been following that thread and think I will buy some oca. I think we have eaten some before and loved it, so why not grow our own tubers?

(sigh...thinks of the weeds to clear in the hahahahahahaveg plot
