    Evening all! Welcome Steph :j

Today I am going to think in more depth about the flowers and perennials that I am going to plant in the back bed. Thanks to some advice from Dave and Rhiw I have a few good ideas to get me started.

The bed is raised with good soil, it is just under a meter wide and the back of it is a rickety open style fence. There is already a few things in there including a gorgeous pinky/red peony and another pink perennial (No I don't know much about flowing plants, can you tell :rotfl:)

I want it to be an ongoing riot of colour so will have some feature plants and then oodles of flowers for cutting.

Rummer, can I recommend the plant selector on the crocus website? It's excellent for planning, even if you end up with different varieties it gives good results and ideas for plants that will work according to various selection criteria.

I am planting a narrow bed at the moment and it's not that easy! Lots of the things I am planting want space behind them. In the future I can widen this.

I am looking more at shrubs which are unfamiliar...to bulk it out.

Non mapaholics turn away now :D

So the links are for antique (check out the dolphins!) Western Wales maps: two maps by John Speede, one by John Ogilby, the other by Blaeu, all 17th century as far as I can tell after comparison to museum originals. They have been used as wall hangings/wall maps and previous owner went a bit mad with red pencil :(.

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3

This last map is Ogilby's Carmarthen to Aberistwith.

Alf, as far as I can tell these were atlas maps printed on back as well but stuck onto cloth backing late 19th C and top and bottom rails attached for wall hanging/charts. I'll be listing these on Ebay early New Year at low start prices and let buyers decide what to do with restoration.

I bet you've found this already, rhiw but just in case

    http://www.vintage-maps.com/en/Antique-Maps/Europe/British-Islands/Blaeu-British-Islands-Pembrokeshire-1648::380.html?XTCsid=cbe1c64f3b10cca432674076aad96f89

The red additions on the strip maps are a pain, eh? :(
Let me know if you want me to do more Marpling ;)

It's obviously one of those sites that won't link properly. The map I'm looking at is the "Penbrochia Comitatus et Comitatus Caermaridunum" by Willem Janszoon Blaeu (*1571 - †1638)
Described in part as "Reference: Koemann II 5530:2
Attractive map of the country of Pembrokeshire in UK by J. Blaeu. From a Dutch edition of "Atlas Maior" in beautiful colour. With 13 coats of arms, one cartouche and two sailing ships. Dutch text on verso."

It was their Product No.: 10412

It's already sold so there's no price given unfortunately.

Edit: So now it works *wallbash* :rotfl:

I sympathise CTC, but I don't know what the answer is. :o

If the business is still bringing in enough to live on then it should be your priority, but if it isn't, or it's making you unwell, then other options should be sought. But what's available locally?

I got to a stage where I knew I couldn't teach full time and keep my Dad on the rails, so I went P/T and it wasn't so bad. Paying for it now in reduced pension though! :(

OTOH, there were things going on at work which were pulling me in different directions, so I realised something would have to give. A few more years down the line and I'd have done it anyway. ;)

Easy to look back with clarity. Not so easy when you're in the thick of it! Either way, only you know what is right for you, but health comes in front of wealth in my book.

    Take care. :A
  • @LIR - You were talking about shrubs. I don't know which sort you are after - large, medium or small - but the deep copper beechy red of Leucothoe Zeblid looks wonderful at this time in the year. We have several shrubberies & also evergreen shrub planted terraces & the Leucothoes really come into their own when the rest of nature is going to sleep for the winter.

@CTC - :( Stress/anxiety can make one feel absolutely awful. Nothing seems to have a light at the end of the tunnel.
It's a Catch 22 for you. The money from the 'day job' goes towards the dream.

Icy here again this morning but the sun is slowly doing its' work. It looks like we'll have one more icy night before we get soaked & blown around again. At least it should get us back into double figure temperatures which would be welcome - particulrly for LIR, I think. :)
