  • First day we've had a proper frost & it was accompanied by ice. Popped out this afternoon & the ice on the lane was there all day - 4WD job on the hills & bends.
However, it was the sort of day where one can wrap up. No howling wind to go right through to the bones &, what's more, no bl**dy rain. :j
Sadly the forecast gives just one more day like today & then it's back to normal. Currently the long term forecast gives 22nd & 23rd dry but every other day of 2012 wet to some degree :(

Hope, by now, your workers have got the heating sorted & the windows & doors latched, LIR.

it is a beautiful day. :)

Heating not sorted. Windows getting there, it's a two day job.

Believe it or not when we started opening boxes we found the ironmongery company had sent loads of wrong stuff. Seriously, you could not make this stuff up. Anyway, we are fitting wrong stuff, and the right stuff will be fitted in the new year.

No, I'm not surprised. I've had some weird & wonderful deliveries in my (building/renovation) time. Really frustrating as it holds everything up.
Good plan to use the wrong ones. At least it should help keep you warm over the Festive (I use the term loosely ;)) period.
In this day & age it may be worth getting the suppliers OK in writing (email?) so they don't end up charging you for the 'pleasure' of the use of the current as well as the delivery of the correct.

Yep, good idea. I will warn my joiner whom I paid for the fittings. It's all just changed again, but because this was all new up until very recently I was able to not pay vat on this stuff under the listed buildings taxation rules, but I will have to in the future.
  • Have you spoken directly to the manufacturers of your heating system LIR?
  • Hi all

Is this thread about people having/wanting a smallholding?. If it is can I join in?.

We bought a 6 acre smallholding two years ago and it is still very much a work in progress.

Much like RozeePozee, ours is a 1950's chalet bungalow that had gone to wrack and ruin. We spent the first 6 months of 2011 living in a caravan in the back of the barn while we totally ripped the bungalow to shreds. It had'nt been loved for a long time.

We have spent 2012 getting planning permission to add a boot room, extra lounge and bedroom, although due to finances we have only 1/2 achieved the boot room this year.

We have managed to fence the 5 acre field. We have Chickens, geese & ducks in the orchard (Planted 2011). We also had 3 pigs and 3 sheep this year which are all in the freezer.

We are getting ready to dispatch our 17 turkeys, 3 ducks & 2 geese this weekend. will be glad when its done as the feed is costing a fortune.

anyway thats enough gabbling about me. We are doing this on a total shoe-string and will take us years to achieve the set up we want, but its our passion so hopefully worth it.

:D I think the stressed part comes with the territory. You'll fit in just fine :rotfl:

We're a rum mix of those dreaming of owning somewhere, those that do (& are at various stages of fruition) &, as far as I know, just me who's been there got the t-shirt & dreaming of a life slightly less fraught with more time to enjoy myself

Hehe sounds like a fun thread:T.

I spent most of this afternoon trying to shoot crows with the air rifle. They keep stealing the birds feed and I have a few bantam chickens that I sometimes worry will get attacked by the crows. Did'nt hit a single thing though, I am such a bad shot. At least I scared them off though :o

I now have decided on another thread not to go into any more detail on line. I think there is a chance this might not end well and I don't want to prejudice anything by discussing online.:o

    Yes, welcome Steph!

There are also a few of us who enjoy as much self sufficiency and independence as their bodies allow but for whom a smallholding is a step too far :o
