  • Hi Purple S. have you found a smallholding coming up for rent? as I know around here they are like gold dust, that was one of the options we were looking at too, and the one I did manage to find was such a high amount:eek::eek::eek:, by the time you worked every hour under the sun to pay the rent rates etc, there would be no time left to look after animals or do some gardening...( let alone have any energy left).

We finally managed to buy our daydream place in march...on times ( well on alot of times) I have thought what the F'k have We done... as since then this year, things have not gone our way, etc... BUT then I think of all the years I have been on my !!! skint, crying myself to sleep, thinking I will never have my own farm/smallholding etc, and I just knuckled down and done baby steps to try and pay off debt and save....

so looking back the poo year this year, is not in the same leaque ....

If you dont manage to get a place next summer... keep going,,, dont get disheartened... there IS a perfect place out there with your name on it..... even if you have to save and buy it... but your farm is out there...

Alfie....Rhiwie....yep hubby is like a pig in poo, when it comes to the pigs...If we could we would be with the piggies all day.

ITSME.... long long ago did you have pigs? how many? for how long? what did you used to do with yours?

We've been looking on http://www.greenshifters.co.uk/for_rent and seen some options. We'd consider moving pretty much anywhere in the UK and Ireland for the right property. Also we have 7 more months left on our tenancy to look for somewhere to move to. Thank you for your encouragement. Congratulations on buying your daydream place!

    Bloody murderous manikins on mars.

    Right.

What rat traps do people recommend. Not keen to poison as I don't much like it (though will use it, and did last year) and don't want it down with the puppy about, especially not if he takes an interest.
  • Purple.S. I bet you love it at the community farm...I bet its great..

ITSME...sadly we wer on of those had a pot belly pig in the 80's but at least we did look after it properly..

I have noticed on the farming ads etc that the so called 'micro pigs' have tumbled in price, people have tried making a killing with them and found out there was no quick easy money so they are selling off the whole lot etc

Rhiwie... Dont you just love um:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:at least i will not have that problem with the caravan.. it sold for £170:eek::eek::eek::eek:

the last farm auction caravans were going for £10-£20 so the next time a really cheap caravan comes up might just buy it to plonk on the bay...

oooo and one of my pairs of knickers have 5 watchers:rotfl::D

Yes, what's fashionable becomes unfashionable. Unfortunately, the same applies to animals for many people. We were there before the fashion & long after it. We just stopped catering for those that wouldn't be.
It's why I tend to go for classic in most things. If it's not "in" fashion it seldom goes "out".

    Oh hell, LIR. :(
They won't be easy to shift even using normal poisons.

In the last week I've read something about some councils asking to be allowed to use the heavier duty poisons because the flooding has caused the rats to spread out & make even more of a nuisance of themselves.
However, a really good Council Pest man knows exactly what he's doing, where to bait so that it should be safe for other animals etc.
Then you need cats - proper outdoor living farm cats. They can't take on hordes of fully grown rats but they'll keep the young ones down.

    Welcome Purple!

Hmmm, just queued for 20 minutes at the Post Office. One of my pet hates (as I'm an unreasonable bad tempered old git) is people who block the PO counter by not knowing what to do with their parcels (I'd gladly tell them), feeling the need to regale the PO Clerk with their life stories, giggle at the queue behind them as it grows ever longer, cant work out how to use the card reader to pay, then stay at the counter when they've finally finished to remember they need a stamp, which they insist they have change for, which requires a 5 minute hunt through their handbag for their purse, they then count out the change, dropping some in the process, realise they dont have enough change, put in back in their purse, open the note section and bring out a £20........................................................................

    AAAAGGGGHHHH

    :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: picture perfect :D

Alfie the rats are out side, feed room and chickens. :(.

Itsme, we have a stable (nuetered) feral group of cats that live off their wits and milk from the dairy farm (just cannot convince them it's not great for them). So we have that angle covered.

Poison did it last year,eventually...but don't want the ferals or the puppy finding a dying rat and eating it!

As alfie said that's highly unlikely particularly if you discuss everything with the Rat Man. Rats come & go using a regular run. It will be the food & water (unlike mice rats need to drink regularly) which attracts them. The Rat Man will hunt out the run & lay bait in a way that your other animals should be safe.
It's been mainly DIY baiting & not using enough poison that has led to rats becoming immune to the stuff.

A rat can breed all year given suitable conditions & can breed from about 5 weeks old. Gestation period is 21 days & they'll have between 7 -14 in each litter. Do the maths

CTC, I get sassy but gently let me know what sissy means :o

Alf, some eclectic listings atm, from 99p to £300. Fans were one of those buys we do to learn about items...totally speculative. Nice wall lights btw!

Finding fewer Docs these days older than me :(

Rozee, if you see a white haired old geezer in the PO queue behind you going red in the face.............:rotfl::rotfl:

Will put pics on tomorrow for the mapaholics, wrote to a bishop today re one map, not sure he'll reply though :D
  • Alfie..... apart from the doc being ancient, are you ok?

LIR we get them in 'waves' so to speak, especially over the last year since all the construction work going on around us, I have noticed the local cats come round, so hopefully they will keep the young rats under control.

Right Rhiwie..... How can I put this without sounding a bit perverse:rotfl: basically man wearing kinky women's clothes being dominered by a woman... also a man wearing kinky women's clothes wanting to be a housewife... or something like that ( I think, didnt want to ask any more questions as I might have had too much info from a buyer:eek::eek:)
