We use a flatbed version of that from the old Somerset & Dorset station in Bath as a means of moving stuff about.

In fact we're just off to retrieve the broody coop on it now, as it looks like the nice weather is about to change....:(

We have been looking for something like that for ages.

I am finding the wheelbarrows a lot some days and for shunting things yard to house it would be great.

    Not easy to find though.

LIR - http://www.liftruck.co.uk/trolleys.html may be of help.

Sorry to hear of your problems, maggie. It all gets very frustrating & depressing when one can no longer do so many everyday things. It feels like you are no longer in control of your own life.
I really don't know what to suggest about MiL, though, sorry.

Sorry to hear you are having such a tough time Maggie, could your MIL stay with family for a couple of days? Not ideal for anyone however it would save petrol and reassure everyone that she was being well looked after.

Thanks Rummer for thinking of us, it's difficult... MiL was hoping for a new hip (before she fell and broke her wrist), she couldn't take the stairs in our place or Brother in Law's. There's no way we could put a bed in our living room for her at the mo as it's full of stuff we're trying to sort from old home. I don't think it's feasible for her to stay upstairs here either, would be too afraid of her not realising where she was and falling down the stairs. Not helped by we're in different area so couldn't get any help from Social Services if needed.

Must admit I'm beginning to wonder how the hell I'd cope if OH dropped dead (we have to face that these things do happen :( ) - would have to sell up and leave fast I suppose. Can't cope with even the small front garden myself, let alone the large(ish) back garden. We figured it was worth moving to this house if we could have 10 years here together. I've always assumed OH is likely to outlive me, and he'd be fine here alone (though the place would prob get very cluttered and dusty :rotfl: ). From what I can make out ME patients tend to lose 10 or more years of life compared to healthies. So though OH is older than me I would expect him to outlive me. And I'm sure he'll manage the garden OK for a few more years (and keep the birds fed! ;) )

I know we only live in a suburban house with a big enough garden to grow a few veggies and have a lawn and some flowers, but health is a big thing to think about for all Daydreamers. It can change suddenly in just one day. :(

Sorry to be so depressing! :o

Thanks IMH, sorry I'm such a downer at the mo, but it *is* something Daydreamers should consider, health is just taken as normal until it goes!
  • ooooo maggie...... (((((hugs))))) to you, so stressfull, Are the carers a private company or council? would really be shooting with both barrels on the phone to them if it was me...

Maggie it sounds as if you are being very sensible hoping for the best and preparing for other eventualities. I hope you sort out something for your MIL that works for everyone.

No need for an apology, maggie.
Believe me I know what a worry things quickly become when health takes a turn for the worse.
If people are lucky it doesn't happen that way & they have the time to make all the necessary lifestyle changes but it is down to sheer luck. One day all's well & the next ..... :(
It's easy to say "Oh we'll move before we get too old" but ill health doesn't always wait for old age. Often it happens so suddenly that there's no time to do the things as planned.
Frustration & worry would make a saint gripe & there's not many saints on MSE :D

Carers can be good, but I'd say you should shop around if they let you down like that, especially without contact.:( Dad's never did, but they'd give me a bell if there was any change to the routine, or a query.

I'm not able to gauge your MiL's condition, but if it were me, I'd be looking for a more long term solution now, rather than wait until it all happens in a panic.

If I'd been tougher and found my Dad the care home that fitted him several years earlier, I'm sure he'd have enjoyed the rest of his days much more than he did. Unfortunately, like most people, I assumed there wouldn't be anywhere remotely suitable, so it wasn't until circumstances forced me, that I took the time to seek it out. It was six months or so, working my way through them and then waiting for the vacancy at the place I was happy with..... And I really was happy, not just satisfied. :)
