Oo-er, lots to catch up with here!
Glad you're back in the land of the telephonically connected, rozee, minus your tummy bug. Stay well CTC, and I hope you retrieve your box of goodies, rhiwfield.....:)
It's been 'one of those days.' Being a week since the Outlaws arrived, they were due to return, but there were still a few jobs to be done, including re-fitting the deck on the mega-mower......
Luckily, I'd taken photos, so we knew what should fit where, even though it didn't look possible. Anyway, after 90 minutes or so, we had it all re-assembled, and it even started second pull......:j
But my joy was short-lived. As soon as I put it into gear for grass cutting, the blades wouldn't spin and smoke came from the drive belt, just the same as before. Pete's welding & straightening of the pulley system hasn't cured the problem, so we're back to square one with that.
But we're not too fussed about grass cutting now. Like the rest of you, we're just wallowing in sloshy mud, thankful that ours doesn't stick like clay does. The rain was with us before lunchtime, and right now it's hammering, but the wild wind hasn't materialised.
Half the barn has about an inch of water in it, so its pants as a storage solution until we can work out a fix. I have a nasty suspicion it will involve me in lots more digging!
Hope the further floods that seem inevitable don't affect any of you guys. Looks like it may dry up in the coming week. We can hope!
Hi Just asked OH about your mower and he said to check the pulleys spin properly and the mower spindle is turning properly and not wobbly or it could be the bearings in the spindle. HTH

DS1 flies in today so DW trying vainly to get things straight, difficult with all the auction goodies strewn around waiting research, pricing and listing
Its a shame my Y fronts are boring, some funky 60s pants would be so much more fun!
Listened to rain and gales during the night, very glad I was tucked up in bed!0 -

The green one might be useful, maybe not for there but for another wondow......it's too cold and windy to measure windows tonight (you'll see tomorrow, we still have no back door.:rotfl:
We are defiantly using the kitchen, which is very comfortable, but has no sink:rotfl: and the windows and doors don't have fittings yet, so they fly open, or ajar to the temporary stays.0 -
Just seen the news and yet more rain for Devon. Hope all's well with our west country posters!

GDs over this afternoon so DW's tidy up time flew out of window. Think she was quite relieved0 -

I can confirm it's with us, along with high winds.
So used to it, this morning's quiet, cheerful sunrise was almost a shock. But I'm not grumbling; one look at the local/national news shows we have nothing to moan about here.;)
Lucielle, thanks for the advice re mower. We'll have another look at it in the week and calmly reassess the fault. Unfortunately, when I'm behind it, I can't see what's happening and my FiL seemed to lose patience when our hard work failed to result in a cure. Can't say I blame him! Besides being a farmer, Pete is a time-served agricultural engineer, so he'll advise. He's fixed the deck, so that's OK and it's just a case of finding what else needs attention....:)
But we have another problem....the woodburner is playing-up, with the smoke coming out of various orifices instead of going up the flue quickly. As we only had the flue swept around 6 weeks ago, it looks like there's a blockage.Luckily, I have a friend who works for a stove company who's bringing some brushes over any time now.
No, not doing it tonight! :rotfl:Thank goodness we have the Aga!0 -
PS. Lucielle, my DD2 failed her hazard perception three times, so your DS isn't unique. Her theory was OK.
As they don't give any feedback, (or they didn't then anyway) she had no idea what was wrong, and nor did anyone else. She was fine on the HP at home & with her instructor, while out on the road she was competent enough. It was all blooming expensive, but she just had to keep going, till on the 4th time she scored enough.
Passed the real driving first time.Has not driven since! :rotfl:

DS1 has passed the perception bit not the theory! Really hoping he'll do it this time but not holding my breath, next one on the 3rd. Think he'll be ok at the driving and his car is sat waiting for him. He's paying for it himself.
Let me know if you need any help/hindrance with the mower.

An update on us:
We've been granted planning permission to extend the curtilage of the property into the field by about 15m plus permission to erect a 12x20 polytunnel, a stable block/workshop.
We are about to submit the householder application. We have trimmed our ambitions on what we are going to do with the bungalow. There's to be no raising the roof. We've added a dormer to give us two bedrooms with en suites upstairs and a first floor viewing gallery to the sea view. Down stairs, we'll add a staircase to get us upstairs, a storm porch and, aspirationally possibly, a large rear extension.
I say "aspirationally" because when we include in our budget things like taking off the roof tiles to insulate the roof, external wall insulation/claddining, Solar PV and thermal, woodburner, new double glazing, under floor heating, possibly a ground source or air source heat pump, I'm not sure how much we will be able to stretch to the planning applications additions to the house!
The bungalow, being unmodernised since possibly the 60s is a kind of blank canvas, but there are so many options and we are thinking we want to future proof it as much as possible, so energy efficiency is one of the things that has become a real priority.
The experience of moving to the country has really changed my perspective, I feel. Everything is more real than in the city, it seems. I am becoming a hippy survivalist. And a squirrel murderer. I wouldn't have been happy for OH to have dispatched two of the bird marauding fiends this time last year!0
