    If we do move one of the reasons would be to avoid car journeys by moving into a town centre. We're reminded of the costs of motoring, not just when we fill up the petrol tank, but when we decide to travel to auctions/previews. At 45p per mile its very easy to rack up £100 of costs, all of which have to be set against any profits made.

    :rotfl::rotfl: what are you driving ?? a tractor ;)

    is my maths wrong or is that 15/17 miles a gallon :eek:

    15mpg is what we get, alfie - 4 ltr 4WD :(
    You'd struggle to get out of the valley in winter with much less & have to make 3 or 4 journeys to town in anything smaller.

    Wow, our ancient defender did much better than that. Just......slowly! I was the only person back in that first nipple winter able to get out in our hamlet. (including tractors and lighter four by fours ). So I was doing runs to supermarket for everyone, emergency vet trips. When the tractors managed eventually it was good. Taught me about living on hills......

    First couple days I could see the horses and slide the mile down to tham, but could not get back at all, had to come on foot circuitous root where snow was still untrodden and less steep. Luckily a farmer sown the bottom did take mine water and cracked open a haulage bale for them.

    After that we found a huge advantage of such a freeze is that big bale silage slides really easily and lightly, never been able to move one of tose before!
  • What's unleaded petrol cost near you all?
    Locally it was £1.49 a litre a couple of weeks ago (the last time we went past a garage) but it would be a bit cheaper in town.

    Nearest is 1.44 but an advantage of living so near towns, you are right, I can get much cheaper if I plan trips t. O go past a supermarket.:D
  • :D It's over a 30 mile round trip to a supermarket with a petrol station from here so it costs us 2 gallons to fill up there :rotfl:

    No, seriously, if we've a reason to go to the main town then we fill up at a supermarket but we don't go there very often - maybe once every 3 months or so, if that.

    HMRC rate Alf .

    It takes into account not just petrol but all costs of running the vehicle.

    You're right, grumpybear. Prices are a law unto themselves.
    I don't know what bus fares are but a taxi to our local market town (half an hour's drive away) costs around £45 one way. Even a hospital car charges pensioners £22 to get to or from the hospital.

    I'm seriously considering not buying another place but renting - at least for a while. So much more freedom. If I want to rent (home or abroad) for a while then I can do it. If a place, be it property or area, turns out to be a dump then move on ..... simples :D
    We've talked about selling up and renting. The last time we had this conversation, it was pre-kids and we talked about doing it in our 60s. Post kids, I don't know when you could do it. From everything I've read, even if they leave home these days, they have a habit of coming back...!!?
