Hey guys. Every time I get on here, something seems to go wrong. I now have a snazzy new keyboard, but the internet is slow as hell...
I've skim read posts, just been looking at pictures really - hilarious! Sorry, if I've missed important stuff which I'm sure I have.
I went on the Permaculture Course. Three days, introductory stuff. I think it will help us. As I think RAS might have said: put your salad veggies by your back door etc but I came away thinking that from a growing point of view, it was more about conservationism and intellectualism. I wasn't bowled over, although I met some fantastic people and for me that's a lot of what these courses are about. One of the participants, a market gardener, taught me more in a two hour joint session than I learnt in the three day course.... I don't think we'll be doing the 2 week residential Patrick Whitefield course at £800, but we may do the 9 days over 3 weekend course run by Aber Uni, just for the fun of it. I love courses....
And our architect's design is based quite a bit on Permaculturey ideas, because we have energy saving and common sense in mind. We are almost at the point of phase one of our planning being submitted. We have had a bit of a falling out with our architect over fees (will spare you the boring detail) but I'm not letting it stress me - it was, very - but I'm trying to be all Buddhist and present and enjoy the moments - which are generally hugely enjoyable. The other stuff will work itself out.
We're discovering that there really isn't any time to do very much unless we parent the children completely contrary to the reasons for moving here, so I'm adjusting my expectations. Slow is the word of the year!
Bizarrely, I'm loving living in the caravan. It's as close to living outside, in nature, as I ever will, I imagine. I know it's going to be hard if it gets very much colder (I look at the longer range forecasts with some dread) but, for now, it's pretty wonderful and the kids couldn't be happier.
I've put hopes for livestock on hold again as it looks like we will be away for extended periods of time until Spring and OH's dad has been ill and hospitalised and we don't know what that will mean in terms of the need to give family support. Meantime, I am encouraging lots of woodland birds as a substitute. Right outside the caravan the birdtable is often teeming with garden and woodland birds, half of which, as a townie, I can't identify. And then there's the Red Kite!:)0 -
lovely to hear from you rozee.
glad you are enjoying "your good life"..0 -
Good to hear things are moving along, rozee.
I wish our architect was into energy-saving more than he is. However, he's someone we can work with, though that means we end updoing much of the design ourselves! Almost every day we come up with something, so the next submission to the council is still probably a week away....:o
Itsme, if the long range is poo, then we can only hope they get it wrong, as they often do. If not, then the polytunnel has plenty that needs doing, including getting the mains in there, as I can't hear my tranny radio above the noise when it's hammering down outside! Need a £20 1980s stereo system from S. Molton Recycle!:rotfl:0 -
Much milder this morning, and I think the remaining doors for empty doorways are being out in today and the French windows being glazed. That should mean, with all the insulation out there, that it's a darn sight more comfortable out there for some more painting (its perishing painting out there as it is, and also some cleaning up.
Also means we can take the 'locks' of screwed planks of wood of the internal doors dividing the areas, for easier access.
My new fridge arrived today. And a light came that I bought from etsy, and it was not really cheap but......I don't much like it. I loved it on the Internet. Oh well, it will do for a long while.
Lost another couple of chooks, might look at another bunch of ex batts soon. Horses are certainly starting to say its the cold season.
I hope it's cold enough to mean some hard freezes for my ground. After the wet summer two of the horses have really thrushy feet, and another two have mildly thrushy feet. It's not a major issue, but it's just somethiong they don't need. Some nice snow in their feet would help a great deal.0 -
It must be milder. I am naked in the caravan for the first time in weeks! Normally, I have about five layers on.0

GRrrr. Glass not arrived on site. Joiner annoying me.0

Glad to hear things are good for you, rozee. :j
Common sense dictates that the things you use most should be nearer the house. As they say ..... it ain't rocket science.
We have some raised beds on a gravelled area where we can grow salad/veg & can get to easily without having to trudge through mud or resort to digging with anything bigger than a small hand trowel or fork.
Herbs, of course, are nearest to the house. Mainly in pots.
With just the 2 of us we don't need large herb beds. I used to dry a load of herbs & flowers. They all hung from the kitchen beams. Looked very pretty ...... but they were really only an enormous dust trap & spider magnet :rotfl:
Will your glass turn up later today or has the delivery been rescheduled, lir? It's frustrating when something puts a stick in the spokes of organisation. Sadly it happens with great regularity when it comes to building work, IME.0 -
Glass tomorrow. The hold up seems to be that we are some door fittings short and they should go on before the glass, but the builder has said he will take responsibility for the glass, we just have to have it in really. I am happy for the doors to be propped shut as needed, but sealed space is becoming truely necessary.0
