I'm an animal person, but I find that cats are easier to please and less messy than dogs.
As a teenager I had an exceptional dog in the intelligence dept, who kept me out of trouble with bailiffs etc for around 5 years. I didn't last long in my 'extra-curricular activities' once she was no longer there to be eyes and ears for me.
I swore I'd never have another dog, but DW came with one FoC and trained. It was a case of 'Love me, love my dog.':(
Although she was exceptionally obedient, I'm afraid DW's pooch wasn't half as smart as my G Retriever, or even the Old English I had on loan for a year as a child. Still, I could take her to town, leave her anywhere, do a bit of shopping and know she'd still be waiting there without any worries on either side.
I can't really recommend ferrets. Lovely though they are, they will pretty much do whatever they want. So, while they'll walk on a lead nicely for a couple of minutes, they'll then decide to have a big roll & a fight. You don't get far quickly! Similarly, put them in a bag or on your shoulder and they'll be OK for a bit, but then they'll need a change. It's a bit like having toddlers with ADHD, fuelled by a bellyfull of E numbers....:rotfl:0 -

I have no problem with people who choose not to have anything ( pets/ children/whatever ) in their life though.
Yes, humans are animals. Sadly, they often act more like animals than the beasts do.
I think the distinguishing thing is that there aren't too many animals (other than humans) who 'keep' other animals whether they want to be kept or not, though.
I do think that we humans often have children & pets purely for selfish personal reasons so, like you LIR, I have no problem with those who chose not to have them.
Which reminds me.... for those of you who live near civilisation, this weekend will probably be all the firework parties so I hope your animals all stay safe & sane.0 -
CTC, thanks EVER so much for that! Now I just have to go back and find out when you bought them and work it out from there :T I had no idea what abattoir costs would be. Pig nuts here are £9 a bag which I think is expensive - London flippin' prices! And I think carrots were £6? I didn't make a mental note of that one. Layers pellets are also £9 a sack.
I know free-range poultry e.g. eating chickens, maybe turkeys and guineas, and home egg production are first on our list to get started with, but I really want pigs and we'd have pure rare breeds. We'd have purebred poultry too... can you see a theme developing here? :rotfl:
Any idea what weight of meat you had per pig? I think I would probably make some of my own sausages because I'm not bad at it - it just takes time.
I just had the worst journey home from work in terms of time, I left at 4.30 and got home at 6.20. It's 10 miles... but I have to cross the Thames at Dartford. I am now shattered and trying to relax."...And if it don't feel good, what are you doing it for?" - Robbie Williams - 'Candy'0 -
OK, indolent day here, bits of sun but lots of heavy, squally showers. Got to be some flooding soon the way its going, called off moving rhubarb beds, just too wet.
Watched Lang Lang on 4, reckon he's passed his grade 10 -
Hail here, some rain, some sun. Ditch by the house ceased running, so dh and I had to spend a couple of hours digging it out. Brrrrrrrrr.
Otherwise, little acheived, despite being busy all day. One of those frustrating days.0 -
Alex, cant remember the exact date, but I know it was the first friday in september we had them.
The actual dead weights were 63kgs and 61 kgs
As we havent long come back from sorting the shop ready for tomrrow ( going to be there at about 7am as there is still work to be done:cool:) we had the sausages in rolls.... totally lovely... again totally tender, not chewy or rubbery like pre-packed sausages.
I am a total pet lover... BUT I am a meat eater, and I have allways dreamed about having a farm/smallholding, I am !!!!!! off with supermarkets presenting us with crap and trying to tell us its premium quality... The only way you will def know is to rear/grow it yourself.. or buy it from someone you know who does..
After losing rocky this year, i dont want to go through that again, so no more dogs for us.. we have a cat whos is about 7 now, and we have a friend who is desperate to find homes for her kittens, sooooooooooooooooooooooooo:D
It was nice today in the city, but when we came home ( about 15 miles) it was sleet:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:Work to live= not live to work0 -
It's all snow on the tops & another cold day. Still not got our car back.
We have the rare breed sale tomorrow & two large cages to fit into the wee car we have a loan of. I'm so behind with stuff that I am sitting amidst paper work towers. It's a fire hazard.
We have two very elderly cats that I know won't be here forever & it pains me to even think about that - one is twenty & cuddles in under the covers like a big fat purring teddy bear - he is so comforting when not feeling well as is the other who is becoming so cantankerous & skinny it's a shame, but such is life. He's 17 so not a young buck either. They are both so clean - thankfully & have never done owt inside that they shouldn't - they use their cat flap.
Pigs seem a good idea CTC - maybe will next year.0 -
ctc & mr ctc

Thank you Alfiekins:beer:
dont know about fun, stress YES!!!!! LOL
cut a very long story short about washing and drying clothes, ( both hubby andmy clothes needed washing/drying, and did youngests) basically work up 5.45am so could have cuppa, sort float out etc, leave by 6.30am to get to shop by 7am and price everything:eek: went to dryer, and it was only youngest clothes in there:eek: problem is the dryer is now on its way out and takes forever to dry things, our clothes were still in the washing machine:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:..
The thing is We dont have many clothes here ( yes I know have a laugh:p) but we wear the same clothes all the time, basically wash and wear...
I think it might be time to
PANIC!!!!!!!!Work to live= not live to work0 -
Alex... wow that's steep for a sack of horse carrots..
With the butcher prices.. it was the add ons that Bulked the price up... sausages etc, as if you dont use them, then someone else will..
I would try and find your nearest abbotttoir and ask them for a full price list, as by the sounds of it, it might more expensive, going by the food prices..
Choille... Loads of breeders are getting out of pigs, due to food prices and people only wanting to pay supermarket prices for the meat.... but for a personal supply with the odd bit of selling... its good...
The meat and shop have comes together, sooooo we havent pushed the meat sales ( all in freezer now....) but the next lot we will have more time to 'tout' for business
right better go and see if i can find some clothesWork to live= not live to work0
