I think the windows issue is a big divider.

Obviously here we have to go wood. And I am pleased (windows went in yesterday!) because while its a maintenance bind, it's also something that I love, something I feel in accord with, something that makes me feel happy.

We are painting ours an off white, a sort of dirty cream, not the more fashionable taupe or green about, which I adore but which I think would be too bold and flash for our house which apart from one end is still a heap. ;). But if we had fewer windows or more money, we could ring the changes with our mood......green windows next paint time, maybe grey ones the time after that.

However, to make the decision you really do have to consider that uPBC is a freedom from window painting. I don't like the way they lopok, but as daydreamers get older or busier a summer to enjoy not paint, and the money spent on paint......it's not something to dismiss as insignificant.

I know just as I would go for wood another dreamer would go for uPVC and who is to say what is the better choice for all?

    Windows, CTC.

It's really down to personal preference & what you are allowed to use. We're meant to have wood but have sneaked in a few very respectable oak lookalikes in places which can't easily be seen :rotfl:
Having an enormous amount of windows & doors, all of which need treating every year, is an absolute bind. :(

All the paintwork was white when we moved in .... until we overheard some snotty NT-type walking up the lane say "Oh look, they have UPVC windows" :rotfl:
They were all wood at that stage & DH had just spent weeks glossing them to perfection so wasn't at all amused.
The gloss came off & we've since used the breathable stain stuff in a darkish brown - which sounds odd but actually makes it look even more like real wood. It doesn't last any longer, unfortunately. He still has to paint somewhere every year.
Soooooo, as there are now so many forms of UPVC which look very like the 'real' thing I'd opt for them. They make double/triple glazing & security much easier, too.
  • We are not governed by anybody re- windows etc, property not listed etc, there are 10 windows in the house and 4 rather wide doors.

inside the doors are small with modern day sizes, inside doors I think is 8, will need to be made due to the small size so wouldnt mind going for something like this,

but with old fashioned door latches..and maybe re-claimed wood, so they look totally rustic..

dont want much from the ranch do I :o:D

Planked doors or possibly ledge & braced, then, CTC.
We have both sorts here - some very old but some new. Of those some are off the peg & others were made by our carpenter.
There are different forms of old latches, too. Some in metal & some in wood. You're in for hours of pleasure choosing the ones you want :D

OH is out massacring the lavender which I fear will be it's death knell this late in the season but, heyho. It's just started to chuck it down again so that'll teach him :rotfl:
