Lir, here's a few before and after photos of my front garden apples and pears.
1 Lateral in need of tieing in
2 Tieing in, I use biodegradeable string to allow for branch expansion. No real harm if I accidentally snip off growing point, another bud will branch out, it just looks a bit messy. Sometimes that happens thru insect attack anyhow.
3 Pear before pruning, no fruit set at all this year.
    4 Pear after pruning
5 Apple 1 before pruning. The lower branches were 18" long when planted, the upper about 4' long. You can see that after 3 years the lower branches are now about 5' long. Fruit set ok, was one of the last to blossom.
6 Apple 1 after pruning, you can see the new lower growth isnt yet fruit bearing
    7 Apple 2 pre pruning
    8 Apple 2 after pruning

Note to self, weed under fruit trees!!

I don't often visit this thread, but came across your post when looking for espalier fruit trees. Thanks for posting the hints. Consider me dumb, but when do you start bending the branches and attach them to the wires? Soon after planting or after 1st year? I had planted a few apple trees last year and I am thinking of growing them as espaliers. TIA for your help.

Hi Unhappy, you will need to tie in the growth while still flexible. You have a choice of tieing in to a diagonal cane during the summer, then flexing that growth to tie in to a wire OR, as I do, tie in every couple of weeks direct to the wire.

So the short answer is to tie in asap, wait too long and the branch may split when bent

Ctc, alfie is generous and knowledgable both. I have found the only way to deal with this is to try and reciprocate with stuff i have that she might be able to either use or sell. Bacon sarnies and another day out seem good 'payment' to me.
