Itsme, good articles from which I draw rather different conclusions.
The fact that UK govt rapidly cut FITs for new installations was due to the increasing growth of supply of panels/inverters led by manufacturing economies of scale and resulting lower prices. Since I installed, prices have almost halved. Which is good news as the cost of generating solar pv electricity has tumbled.
Where I agree is that the market was taken by surprise by the speed of Govt action, and this will/has undoubtedly led to collapse/exit of weaker UK installers and a temporary demand reduction. Across the world weaker players will go to the wall as all of this is set against the worst global economic background I've ever known.
But thank goodness for all the bad news! Where would my oil heating bill be without the prolonged downturn? And there's the rub. Fossil fuel prices have risen and continue to rise. Goodness only knows what the oil price would be in an economic upturn. But renewables costs have fallen. So at what point will renewables be cheaper than fossil fuels? I suspect it wont be many years before "alternative" energy sources become mainstream, and oil boilers like mine are viewed as an aberration best consigned to the scrapyard0 -

Probably very true, rhiw.
In fact the cost of fossil fuel (both for domestic & transport use) is already a turn-off for many prospective buyers of countryside properties.
For those of us "off-grid" who rely on things like oil there will probably be little alternative but, by then, the countryside will be entirely the province of the rich who take these things as read - in rather the same way as having to pay large fuel & tax bills for suitable transport. Electricity in these sort of areas where one cannot get the benefits of duel fuel tariffs is already much dearer than areas where mains gas is available. The other turn off is, of course, that oil etc. has to be paid for up front. If those that want a land tax get their way then the rural economy may as well give up the ghost.
However, in areas like ours, individual solar installations are often only allowed on things like barn rooves or as installations at ground level in inconspicuous places as they are viewed (along with things like satellite dishes) as eye-sores.
BTW remember our conversation on the wind farms? Fullabrook is still having problems.0 -

Alf, sorry to say that it's probably just a storaker used for fumbling norberts and, as such, utterly worthless in todays market. But as a kindness I'll take it off your hands sight unseen for 50p (incl P&P) and do my best to find a new owner for it
Not that I'd put it on Ebay of course, or count the sale towards the challenge0 -

Well, we went to Marwood Gardens yesterday on the strength of the reasonable weather forecast, picking up the electric chainsaw on the way. It was a special event day for Macmillan nurses, but there was hardly anyone there, besides us.
(Not that we mind, especially a this time of year!)
Anyway, it was a bit disappointing, probably because the autumnal colours aren't quite there yet and the summer bloomers are over......and it rained. Came home to lovely sunshine!
Nice to have a break, though.0
