    lol:rotfl:

the whole chimley on that wall is brick on the outside too, so do you think the chimleys were added later? or there has been a problem with the outter chimley wall, and they re-done it in brick? maybe in the 1900's?

The fireplaces were def part of the original building/build

no, the brick is right, as that other stone work would not be good for heat resistance. im wondering if the outside wall had a rendering on it originally?
what i meant re the "odd" brickwork is that if in the fashion of the other "mr fixits" there;)
they had a bedroom fireplace. which if there was a weakness in the back STONE work they have put bricks as a replacement but they have then just bricked up the front .possibly no air vent in the back ? if the rain/moisture is coming into the chimney from the top it will just follow the line and literally HIT A BRICK WALL :o [hence down stairs getting damp..]it will not be able to breath. same principal as down stairs....[which can now breath and is dryer ? if that inside fireplace brick was removed [ carefully starting with ONE brick under lintel] as long as its not attatched to the outside brickwork in any way it should allow air in to let it breath...be a tad draughty but will dry out anything that is lingering ... if im right..:o...then thus the damp below above/around downstairs wall.

or im wrong and removing that one brick will make your house fall down and i emigrate...:D
  • We have removed the bricks from the fireplace, they had filled it in to prob cement/plaster the brick walls.

That side of that wall is dry, and so was the contents behind the bricks in the fireplace.........

but any loose original lime morter just crumbled in your hand

That's some fine loft insulation you have there, CTC!:rotfl:
I remember the same sort of thing in the houses my parents bought when I was a kid.

Sounds like Alfie's Celtic outing was a great success. I'm jealous because I don't get to visit Wales now, except for funerals, which don't really count. :(

Quiet day here. Don't mind that though!

I don't think chimney built on the out side means an issue or later addition. I say this as someone who had to suddenly get interested in chimneys in a hurry when the designs were not quite working. ( goodness knows if it will draw though). Being on an outside wall actuall adds ( or doesn't take away) valuable inside feet.

the outside wall is flush . the chimneys are internal but the walls are mega thick so almost contain them. on the outside you can see the line in brickwork of the chimney's path. the rest is old stone work [like small stone wall work] but on one side is a square of brickwork sort of like a picture hanging which CTC has now discovered is the back of the fireplace they have discovered . but bearing in mind how thick the wall is im surprised that the back is brick when it is no where near the brick lines of main chimney breast. as the inside bricked up bit has no air vent im not surprised its caused damp. which makes me think the external wall may have been origionally rendered somehow

    hows your back rhiwi ????
were your ears burning as CTC and i strolled round tescos ??;) :D

Just back from A&E after nice ambulancemen hauled me out of bed with the aid of a gas air mix:eek: This after out of hours doctor was phoned at 10am and was still on way at 6pm:mad:

Not one of my better days but so glad you and CTC got together.
  • CTC if you have damp walls upstairs check the roof flashings around the chimneys (normally made of lead) as we've had loads of problems with ours. Our bedroom is horribly damp in the winter, not helped by three external walls and not being able to insulate above it without taking the roof off.

Sounds like you had a great time Alfie!:jShame I'm a bit too far east to join in... we'll see what happens next year, eh?

Back to the grind today, not looking forward to it but I have to keep on track for now - no running off to spend loads of money I don't have!

    Have a lovely day everyone.

I suggest meet ups might be best at each othersaces in turn if others feel comfortable with that? Then at least one lucky daydreamer does not have to find cover for that day.

Everybody HAS to see heaven that is alfie's home. I really, really want her to be in a home and gardens stle magazine (might make her departure less popular too ;) and she can make it public that the drains are dopdgy and the leccy hers) while looking gorgeous.

Oh dear! That sounds like the pain was really bad. Poor you! :(
I hope you're soon over this and that your back returns to the easier state you've 'enjoyed' for the past year or so.

It's a bit of a sad thing, but as we develop this place, we also plan for the day when, inevitably, I won't be able to do the heavier work. Could be 20 years on, could be next week....

The good thing is that you have your garden/house sorted for maximum efficiency, or close to it. :)

Got the cake levels down in the last week or so. About four feet left in it. Might see if i can see weather forecast and drain a bit more this week. Down to the bottom means i am less confident in the quality of the water and will not do anything that might polute water course, would rather have been this empty in early summer, when the bottom water could have fertilised us in a normal year!
