We had the chimney sweep today, so I've been sorting out the woodburner now we have a proper airway for it again. You should've seen what came out! :o

I was dreading it, but I've finally changed the glassfibre rope on the door. I'm also having a couple of new firebricks cut to pattern, because I'm told the maker of our stove only sells full sets....at about £60!!!

In other news, I think my toms might be getting blight. It's not certain by any means, but I have been picking as many as possible, just in case. A few weeks ago they looked quite good-ish....:(

  • flip Davesnave.. if they didnt have tomatoes on them, I would have thought they were another plant;):D

Alfie.. oooo interesting... I will measure them tomorrow..

Spoke to a neighbour who's friend nearly bought our place a few years ago, and their architect said the wall had to come down then, and the 'wet' wall needed under-pinning?

Been trying to read up on old stone walls lime mortar etc..

    http://www.homebuilding.co.uk/advice/existing-homes/renovating/repointing-stone-walls

Looks as though there might have been a sort of lime rendering on the walls maybe? ( which you thought it might have had Alfie)

Def going to see if I can find a stone mason to see if we can save one end wall.

Been cold all day today, cant warm up, so hubby went up to the range on his own tonight, I done a quick shop and I have just slobbed out on the sofa... hubby is going to lite the fire tonight...
Work to live= not live to work
  • Most stone buildings were 'finished' in some way, CTC. They were seldom left naked/
It could be render but they were sometimes slated (like this).
Either way, taking off the protection without doing further remedial work would have left the place prone to damp.
It may even have been during the removal of the exterior that part of the wall (by the fireplace) came down & bricks were used to make good.
If you use lime mortar, plaster etc. they won't work if mixed with any modern materials. So if you lime plaster you'll need to limewash.

Is that a brown spot on the laves  Nope , yet another ripe tom :D

Topstak our way also cuts firebricks to demand for the same reason

Slept in an old typists chair last night to avoid another bed stranding. Effective for the back but hard on the rear :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Ladies, happy to start recording weekly Ebay challenge sales each Monday from now on. Let me know how you want these sent back to you and what should be used publicly. FWIW warm up week Chez Rhiwfield was £324, but I'm not listing for next 10 days, dont want endings to clash with sunny Devon :D

CTC, these people know all about lime mortar (Welsh of course!).
