Hi all.
I seem to have alot of shark fin melons growing, so need your best uses for them please, I haven't used any immature ones yet, but by looking at the amount that are maturing, I need to use some soon, because I also have alot of normal type squashes to use up this winter, I think about 18 at the last count.
I also found this link about keeping chickens, which I found interesting.

I have to go into hospital on Thurs for some tests....
Did I tell you I got some new hens, well someones cast offs - they're laying mega eggs & have really settled into their run & house. Think I'm getting on top of their scaly legs.
All the best with the tests, which are never any fun. My MiL had some last week which she was dreading, and they came back completely clear, so sometimes it can be a positive experience. Mind you, I coulda told them, MiL is indestructible....:(:rotfl:
Scaly leg is a right pain, so if it doesn't clear up, Ivermectin in the form of Harkamectin for pigeons will shift it, but there's egg withdrawal for 2 weeks, I think. You have to dose according to weight, not pigeon dose.
Kernackered tonight as a result of driving daughter back to uni in Bournemouth via the fence post place, which meant using the van.:( Still, there's a huge pile of posts in there which will soon be doing a great job of tidying the place up.
I think it's worth going a bit out of the way to get the right posts, as I hear on the grapevine that some locally-produced ones have not been lasting well. These are guaranteed 15 years.
The guy looked at me a bit funny when I said, " I want to select them. No boxed hearts!" which means no posts made from the middle of small trees. However, when we got to the pallet, there were hardly any nasty ones at all. Nice, but then, they're a 'nice' price too!0 -

Alex,
Take care at work. That atmosphere can be toxic. Dh has been out of his for six months and seems half a foot taller, but is dreading going back!0 -

I have lost count of my squashes and STMs. The STMs have gone beserk and they're now fighting with my comfrey, as well as going next door into the thatcher's store area. The squashes took a long time to get going, so their productivity might vary a lot. I'm growing smaller ones this year, as the Blue Bananas were just too big. Stored brilliantly though.
I gave my DD1 one of the STMs, but she hasn't reported back on it yet. I hear they store for up to 2 years, so she might not be in a rush to use it.....
The chicken article is thought-provoking. I suppose we are half way there with our present set-up, but I know we could do better with the use of electric fencing. I'll have to read it again when less tired.0 -
Well, we truley free range. I can rest bits with use off femcing them OFF not fencing them in. But we do get congregation. One place is the collecting barn in front of their house. But there are a few others.
Ours mainly eat bugs, they Love the muck heap! I notice our grain/ feed use is significantly higher in poor weather, when they prefer to stay in the barns.
Predation has been a problem.0 -
Mentioning the comfrey made me remember, this is my set-up for extracting just the comfrey juice, without added water:
It's just a fruit juice barrel with the top cut off and a hole near the bottom. I load it with comfrey, then put the lid on top add a few bits of tree trunk for weights and leave it to get on with it. I add more weight as the lid slowly descends over a couple of weeks.
The juice that comes out is dark brown and it doesn't smell too bad. I have been storing it. After a month it smells a lot more and has some mould growth.
I've been using the liquid feed on the toms/peppers, but there are signs that the toms are getting too much potash and not enough magnesium.....Epsom salts next, I suppose.0 -
Davesnave, some of my plants have yellow leaves, like mag deficiency. I have put it down to the huge amounts of rain over summer, but what would you advise in flower borders this time of year to replenish?0
