    Progress so far.

Think it will draw? The hearth goes on top of that concrete lintel, quite high up, and the concrete lintel above that takes the mantel. So, original fireplaces did not have concrete lintels, but hopefully our risk of chimney fire is less!

It's classified as a recurring payment that is coming off.

I hope the bank start doing summat as they're supposed to. It's the co op bank based in Skelmersdale! SP? There did use to be a branch in Inverness - 75 miles away but that branch shut a while back.

Goodness LIR - That's amazing. Draw on chimneys is a fine art a specialised thing. I think that if you've followed the original & not altered the roof height & nowts impeding drft such as a tall building next to you that wasn't there before then you should be reet.
Goodness ctc - rhiwfield's off to a gallop.

    Off shopping................for food.

We just got back from Vets.

17 1/2 years is a good innings for a dog but we both cried like babies as she was put to sleep.

Oh rhiwfield. I am sorry to hear that. 17 and a half years is more years to grow to love her in.

So so sorry Rhiwie. Hugs to you both! You had many happy years together and that time will be remembered with a smile in time. Love ignores the boundaries that the end of lives create.

You can always stick a fake beam in front of the concrete one. If it's done well you can't even see the difference.

That is sort of the plan. We wanted something in particular that we could not find, so we are cobbling something together. :)

I've been badly scammed by a company based goodness knows where & they're pluming into my bank account - I sent off for some free smaples of face cream & paid for the postage- the took nearly £65 off me on the 4th....I've spent a lot of time trying to sort it out & am shocked at the way I've been spoken to by the bank, by VISA by Citizen's advice etc. I've been treated as if I'm an embecile. Wonder you didn't hear me losing the plot down there..........

    This might help

Trouble is the legally you may still "owe" the money to the company even if you can stop the payments.

So you do need to write to them and cancel the contract.

In English law 2 first class letters sent to the address from different post offices with certificates of posting counts as notice as far as the courts are concerned.

  • Hello all

I hope I am n the right place!

Basically my hubby and I have been talking of one day owning our own smallholding but we don't quite know how to get there! We are not even in the planning stages lol it is atm just a dream as we have no idea how to make it happen!

We are lucky enough to own our own home mortgage free (worth round 170,000-180,000sh) and I have 20,000 I have just inherited. We have no further debts. I currently grow what little fruit veg I can in our small garden but would love to do more, my mother grew all our fruit and veg on an allotment and would love to pass the bug onto my daughter. We are on the list for an allotment but the waiting list is looooooong. Unfortunately we don't have enough room for chickens much to our 3 yr old disappointment :( We long to live somewhere with enough land to grow plenty of veg n keep chickens, and live closer to nature than we do in surburbia which is slowly but surely sucking the life out of us!

I know it seems like it should be simple but we don't really know where to start.

The dream would be for my hubby to be able work part time in order to have enough time to work on our small holding (with maybe a campsite or something to keep a bit of income coming in) as we don't see how it would be possible for just one person to do, especially with a little one n tow! This throws up the issue problem of little or no income, how do people survive? Where does the income come from, selling veg, eggs and suchlike doesn't seem like it would bring in enough to pay bills etc or make improvements such as installing pv panels or a wind generator, maintenance costs....

Appologies if I sound like a complete airhead but I am really trying to get my head around all this.
I am no stranger to living frugally and simply having lived in a van for sometime before meeting my hubby. However having been living a suburban existence for the past 10 years we are not quite sure how to begin our journey? We don't want to trek miles across the country and buy somewhere just because it's cheaper. We live on the Norfolk/Suffolk border and all our family is here and it is important for us to stay as close to them as possible. We also don't want to be totally isolated, just enough space to grow and breathe and be n nature.

All help and suggestions are very much appreciated. :T
