Eggs - I would think it's probably something along the lines that Dave suggested, lir.
I know that ducks bred for the table keep traits which don't breed out for a couple of generations. I imagine it can easily be the same for other birds/animals. It sounds like something in either their digestive system or within egg-formation is producing weaker eggs.
It could also be age-related. Presumably, by now, they've outlived their normal (by battery standards) working life.
CTC - Probably a silly question but they are bites & not something like an allergic reaction?
If you have fleas in your grass you can treat them with chemicals, I believe, if they become a real nuisance.
All fleas require an animal to sustain life.
I'd imagine that you must have something 'lousey' crossing your land - could be anything that they're hopping off.
Then they lurk in the grass waiting for you to come past
Keeping grass very short helps but it won't necessarily get rid of them.0 -
I have no experience with hybrid hens, but I wonder if the ex-batts, although in good health, are still unable to capitalise fully on their free-range environment. They were bred for circumstances unlike those they are in now, so in some ways their bodies aren't quite in tune with the outdoor life.
The above is probably just waffle!!!
:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: i can smugly say i sussed wrong plant before i read your humble apology...:rotfl::rotfl:
too much country dancing and ale me finks...;)
re chooks. i was told that it takes a full "season" [assuming 6 months?] for battery hens to acclimatise. thier bodies are depleted of basic vitamins while incarcerated. so when they start to get them on free ranging ,thier bodies have to re learn how to absorbe/reuse them. ive had them in the past and ive lost 30% and the old boy told me its because they have overloaded thier system with what in effect is "healthy living"...
bit like a human taking too many vitamin tablets...the organs overdose and can be dangerous. he suggested small areas of grazing ,building up to larger over a season.
but to quote WISE OWL ... the above is probably just woffle :rotfl::rotfl:0 -

Well i have just won a load of furniture on ebay:T
a dresser, table 4 chairs, a cabinet and a nest of tables, all painted up, for £62:beer:
I was watching it before and forgot to bid ( starting bid then was £100,) no one bid, so they re-listed it with a starting bid of 99p or a bin for £100... so i took the gamble...
its not to everyone's taste, but i like it

Re insects, we have had quite a few ticks this year now. My dogs have frontline during spring/ summer, which while almost useless for fleas i have upuntil this year found reliable gor ticks. On saturday i had to remove two which, despite being re frontlined last week, had been on big dog for a couple of days. I kept hoping they would die to make things easier, but they did not. I fear this is the start of a resistance issue.0

It might well be some sort of flea on the land, as people walk their dogs past the house, and if they are un-controlled run everywhere..( which most of them do)
They are mainly on the bottom half of my legs, and my hands/lower arms..
There were loads of knats there last weekend... so i thought it could have been that?
Really pleased with my ebay buy especially as there was something similar to the cabinet on ebay for £255...
Flip i couldnt buy the furniture and the laura ashley paint for that price..
weather looks nice and sunny today, so will prob toddle off up to the new place
right i am staring at a cuppa and 2 chocolate biscwits... and
the temptation is too much.... :rotfl:I got to surrender and scoff them lolWork to live= not live to work0 -
Nice furniture CTC. I've seen a nice wardrobe for the boys room, we only have 2 wardrobes between 6 of us. Trying to justify it to myself.

Oh ticks
You have deer, too, don't you? They spread ticks across vast areas &, if there's bracken, ticks become a real nightmare. They seem to thrive on the stuff.
Make sure you check yourselves as well as the animals regularly, lir.
We can always tell visiting ramblers & holidaymakers who have no real experience of the problem. They potter about amidst the bracken in their shorts. Sometimes they've obviously spent a fortune on walking boots, rucksacks, matching jackets & shorts etc. but never given H&S a thought.
Little wonder that Lyme's Disease has been on the increase in this country.0 -

Yes, we have deer.
which tbh surprised me. We are not a bracken-y place, but more to the point their are not many trees....i would have thought we were too open and population dense but never the less we have them, and io love them.
We wear shorts too.....mainly because dh has psoriasis so sun exposure time is extremely beneficial, but yes, we check over each other.
I really hate hate ticks, they are some how worse than fleas or similar.0 -
I think it could ne midges/knats... this aftenoon when we dug a bit more ground the knats were at soil level just flying around:mad:
Havent heard from the seller of the stuff i won last night....so i just emailed them again for their address etc...
hope they are not going to play silly monkeys and not honour the auction...
back in work tomorrow:o but they have given bad rain so i dont mind:DWork to live= not live to work0 -
