We think its because in london even the 'good' builders have more competition than the ones out here.
It's probably due to a whole lot of different things - competition being one.
Work on old buildings, to do properly, is never cheap.
It's hard to compare costs between different places. styles, people, work, materials - but it's amazingly easy for £100K to be spent.lostinrates wrote: »We moved here summer 2010. I'd say "Bu**er the toms" & put in a pool & terrace :rotfl: No, I know you can't. Nor could we as planning here only allows pools inside existing buildings.
We have sun-trap areas but, being less than 500 yards from the coast + up a hill, it's that old breeze that caps the temps. That's great for the people trudging the coast path but I prefer to sit still occasionally :cool:0 -

My chickens come in early. Its really strange because befor ewe moved, and still have some of those chickens, they used to line up and watch the sun go down before trooping in. The only one who doesn't always go away early is Attila the Hen, who is blind in one eye and partially sighted in the other. She is amazing, one of the ex batts, comes running when i call her, following my voice, but in the evening, she usually sits where she is and callls me, quite calmly, until i have found her and popped her in.
Oh bless!! Awww, that's caught my heart....:o0 -

she is very sweet. she was quite aggro when she arrived, we called her attila the hen becaus of that, but now she has relaxed and is a poppet. some new ex batts arrived yesterday, but they are not ex batts, these are proper ex freerangers, organic. they are totally feral and riddled with worms too.:(
worming starts tpoday, and i am doing mine too.
when they arrived, ours were in the yard in some temp fencing...we had a visit from a fox on thrsday...sure it was a fox this time, or a cat...lots of feathers...i know it sounds terrible but feels better to lose one to a predator than a mystery. it was crowbar, one of my own hybrids. anyway, as a result i have been keeping them in the house and our front yard, which mine are mainly happy about...get the odd escapee...usually my pretty Pet, and hoppa, dh's bird that looks like a bird of prey. but the ruddy new arrivals were hopping out like fleas in a mad cat ladies house. we had to get them back from the road several times. to be clear, we did not turf them out into the yard, but put them in the house, in the well of the dairy, so that they could wander out.
the introduction went fine. the rooster, dee, his eyes were on stalks, and never mind twinkling, rather flashing like christmas lights on regent street.0 -

The quote for the demolition and removal of the bit we want to extend is £16K eek! I know that OH and the man with the diggers can do it for a lot cheaper than that.
It's too busy here to keep up as we're mid move, so I'm dipping in and out. Laughing at the Story of the Bees.0 -
Morning peeps, we have the yellow ball. Bit stumped as to what I can do in garden as the hen pen needs re vamping and to do that I need OH. He's at work, thinking his last day at work will be 23rd of June. Had some figures through for the redundancy and that will clear a chunk of debt.
Thinking about going to the beach, just throw some butties together and go. Had my first outing woth DS1 driving the other day. Spent the whole journey clutching the handbrake!! He did very well.

helloooo everybody thats not sat in the sun somewhere
well, i am but im in the garden with my laptop JUST picking up the signal...
yesterday afternoon i spent swopping all my naff pots for the "good" ones i was given and replanting all the flowers on my likkle patio bit by front door.. i can walk from the gate to my door and round the back without dodging foliage now..:D i do tend to overdo it a bit but i love being greeted by a MASS of colour. i have removed [well it disintegrated when i touched it] an old frame from a butchers block table i had there with allsorts of pots in the middle of it. so i have space now ....for MORE pots of flowers..:rotfl: i still have about 15 urns/pots to use so will do a bit more this afternoon. trouble is i have to scrutinise each pot to see if anything is growing that hasnt appeared yet... sos i dont chuck a poor plant out..:(
i didnt get to auto jumble yesterday...may go this afternoon...last minute bargains ?? went to BFs last night, he cooked me a meal..:)
im after a RHIWI item at the mo....shouldnt be buying but hey ho...he will put nice things up for sale..:D
when ive finished doing my pots i will post pic.
to all you having "costing" problems ...i so wish it was builders from here...the costs you are quoting seem horrendous. my friend who "restores" old places [by restore, she doubles the size and guts them..;) ] has done a BIG house for less than rozee has been told ??? her builders work on a day rate and she never gets an all over price. she tells em what fittings, either she orders them in or they do but she is in control and pays the invoices for materials. i think this is where some builders use "artistic licence" and gain ££££s.
right now decisions decisions....pots or auto jumble ??
gonna do a CTC... cuppa and biskwit then decide..:D
hope CTC has done well at her sale ? she deserves it.:)0
