Glad to see you are feeling more positive about the garden now rhiwfield. :)

Must admit my commitment varies, mainly because for much of this place it's still a waiting game. For example, we have about 1/4 acre of 'empty' soil here now, but it's not really empty, because the rain has brought up the couch grass still lurking below the surface. Now we could plant into that, but if we did it would be there for ever, so it's a case of wait and then kill, a couple of times over. We've dug out what we can, so as these are not food producing areas, it will be Mr Dow's job to deal with it. :(

It's the same out at the front. There will be major changes there, and huge piles of rubble, skips etc, so no chance to sort that either ATM.

We were at the architect's office for almost 2 hours yesterday thrashing out the final details of our preferred design for the house refurb. Now we have it, the chances are that it won't happen in full, due to the costs. I don't think these are unreasonable, but we just don't have the dosh. :o We shall put in for planning on the full monty anyway, and there's still the possibility of adding later if we should ever have the money/ mad desire to do it, so it's not a complete waste of time. :)
I'm hearing you Dave. We met up with our's today. We are not going to raise the roof and have scaled down the idea of extending. An annexe just doesn't make financial sense. We could buy a house in the village for what it would cost to raise the roof to put the annexe in. We've come up with a plan that now involves leaving the bedrooms and main bathroom where they are. Let's hope this makes the other alterations affordable. Like you, Dave, we'd like a plan that gives us the option to make further improvements in due course. This would be to finish off the loftspace into two additional beds and a further bathroom. They aren't needed at the moment though as we only use two bedrooms anyway! I look forward to the day when these children don't want to sleep with us, although I enjoy it too :p

The historic buildings look really interesting CTC. We're hoping to do a trip to Llanerchaeron in a couple of weeks for a Welsh learner's festival. Dwi'n dysgy Cymraeg ers mis Medi nawr. It's tricky, even though I like learning languages. The boy on the other hand talks in his sleep in Welsh and the girls started Welsh nursery this week and are already coming out with phrases!

When we've suspected an egg-bound hen, lotus, it's always been behaviour such as general lethargy, drooping tail etc. We've sat them in a bowl of warm water for about 20 minutes, which is supposed to help, and which they don't object to. We've also given them a dose of olive oil.

The last hen we did this with, perked-up and started laying again, but there was no proper evidence she was egg-bound in the first place. She might well have got better anyway. Some of our hens, notably the Welsummers, have egg-laying lay-offs too, which seems to be normal for them.

Another absolute scorcher & spent most of the day hacking at over grown honey suckle, clematis & trying to wrest a little order to the shrubbery - shifted a few Bird Cherries as don't like killing those trees as they are good for the dickies.

Ordered some hens from Skye - was down for cancellations - as he was all ordered out - so that's good, will help relieve the Orp females a bit as there's too few for the cockerels so are having a hard time of it - despite having saddles. Poor things.........

A band of low cloud descended over the Pudding this evening - looked so weird, but just reminds you how quick the hill can be shrouded in a blanket of the stuff & catch the walkers out - dangerous......

We still intend to go upwards, but not outwards as well. We were only extending lengthways to achieve larger bedrooms, which are nice, but not essential; we only sleep in them!

I think finding the right architect is the hardest bit. It was second time lucky for us. This guy is so careful, not only with the drawings, but to find out exactly how we live and think. He's also not afraid to sit down with us and try different ideas out.

Several times yesterday one of us said, "Well, have you thought about X?" and he'd say "Yes, but if we did that Y & Z would happen." He impressed me with the way he'd thought every detail through in a couple of different ways. :)

In the end, our design is pretty straightforward, but it's all about how we got to it. ;)

    Another absolute scorcher ..

It was sunny & warm here too.

I was out in the fields most of the day, spraying the docks & thistles with the knapsack, but for the first time, I finished inside a day. :D I was dreading 2 or maybe even 3 days of it, but our weed problems are certainly diminishing. :)

I finished off the day by whizzing around the lawn with the brushcutter (yes, it was that long!!!:o) but just at the end, I sent a stone flying and cracked a pane in the conservatory. It's safety glass, so it's still merrily cracking, but we've stuck cling film to it, just in case. As the conservatory will be coming down, it doesn't matter much, but I am now writing my 100 lines....

I must remember to keep my back to the house when strimming.:o

Honeybees descend in a swarm following the queen bee. So tend to stay in a bunch like this......

    honeybee-swarm-roof.jpg

Did you see anything like this, alfie?

They will either have left a nest or hive not too far from your place or, if you're really unlucky they may have been nesting in your house (cavity wall, loft somewhere like that) & what you are seeing is them leaving.

If the swarm is still around a beekeeper can collect it without too much hassle as long as they can retrieve the queen all the rest will follow.
If they've come from inside you may find they'll just move on but it's worth a good check around to see if you can see or hear anything.
