Afternoon all, it really makes fascinating reading this thread. makes me feel like a part time amature with my tiny plot and problems. i would like to report my asparagus has just started to poke through the ground, so excited its the first year of cropping for us. i have been scaring the pigeons away from the broad bean patch. cherry tree has oodles of blossom on it now, plum tree only ever had 5. we found a fab house the other day with 1/2 acre attached and it was up for sale, (5-6 years too early for us to buy but heyho) and oh has finally agreed to me having some chickens, still wont be this year but we did go looking at some. it finally dawned on him if i had an extra interest he would be free or allowed to do more fishing. win win.Grocery Challenge 24th Feb-28 Dec 2012 £2000/£1404

Not quite sure why but the process of making stock is deeply satisfying, nothing going to waste, chicken carcase stripped of last of meat for a braised chicken and soy sauce later, scraps kept for the dog's meal tonight, pan simmering using own leccy, herbs and onions, lovely smell wafting out of the kitchen
Another bed cleared and GH tidied up for tomato plants. Still cold outside though, soil isnt warm yet.
Given the age related issues we've been discussing, we've taken the decision to make the chicken run permanent. It will mean moving the rhubarb patch, but moving the coop daily during late spring to early autumn is getting harder. We'll plant up more greens for the chooks to compensate and increase the run area. I thibk it may also be possible for them to free range in the winter months.0 -

I was married to someone from the area who could speak Welsh when necessary. The only time I can remember it being used was on a trip to North Wales. We popped into a shop &, when they heard us speaking English they swung from speaking English themselves (we'd heard them as we went in) to speaking Welsh. They were a bit taken aback & rather sheepish when OH joined in the Welsh, too. :rotfl:
Well, it's 53% Welsh speaking round here and dwi'n dysgy Cymraeg twpyn bach nawr. I love the fact that if you go into a shop in town you're as likely to hear Welsh being spoken as English. It feels like you are in a foreign country - as you are
It's a huge political hot potato and a complex issue. I'm very supportive of efforts in trying to maintain levels of Welsh language and our son goes to the local Welsh medium school and the girls will start at the Meithren (Welsh medium nursery) next week. It's a huge experiment and even though the kids speak Welsh the whole time in school, they revert to English a lot it seems in casual situations. Even where they come from a Welsh speaking family. How do you turn back the tide of so many speaking the majority language and all other media being in Saesneg (English)?0 -

Don't get me wrong. I'm all for keeping languages & dialects etc. It was just that this particular occasion was so obviously a "talk English so the Saesnag can't understand" when, unfortunately for them, one of us was Welsh & spoke the language, too.
It was, however, back, when the Welsh used to regularly set light to 2nd homes owned by the English. We don't see so much of that now.0 -
Fed up of hitting rock. Picked spot for the kiwi and the wine berry and CANNOT get them in.....grrr. Rain had driven us in but next time we go out we go out with the pick axe. That ground is gonna regret the day it messed with me, i am setting my husband on it.0

Oh, and a friend is giving us their old sit on lawn mower, hurrah. They say it might only last a couple of years, but what a relief!0

You cannot say i did not give the ground fair warning. Dh won, they are both in and now we are off to give the horse a massage. I have had experiences like that in North Wales. Certainly not encountered any such exclusiveness in West Wales, although there's always going to be differences in perspective in these situations.0 -
We made a new "Real Free Range Eggs" sign yesterday. Today we sold all the eggs surplus to those our 'regulars' have.
I'm putting the thresholds onto the big polytunnel now. They are 6" x 3" and need a lot of concrete under them. Once we have those in place, we can use the sliding doors, which must bolt into something or they wave about!
Compost is something I always mix and never use straight from the bag. B&Q peat free was OK at one stage last year, with a nice open texture. Then I had a naff bag purporting to be the same stuff, but it was quite different. After that they didn't have any more in my nearest branch, so I bought a pile of Westland peat free from Mole Valley Farmers. That's OK, but expensive.
This year the compost could be different again I'm afraid. So far, I've just been using up Westland stuff, with grit (I have a tonne bag!) and some industrial vermiculite I found kicking around. For shrubs/trees & big plants I add in some soil too. (free here!) Edible plants get chicken poo pellets added and ornamentals get Osmocote. If selling plants on quickly, you can skip adding extra fertilizer.
