I came bounding home today determined to do work in the garden after an exhausting few weeks during which it has been neglected. I humphed the lawnmower out, hunted down the cables and got half the lawn (:rotfl:grass/weed combo) cut before the heavens opened and I got soaked to the skin
Must have been comical to watch as I dashed about the garden in the lashing rain stumbling and sliding all over the place trying to unplug the lawn mower and gather everything in :rotfl:
Tried to get someone to come and dig over the beds and tidy things up in the garden but was told it wasn't worth it to them as too much work . So I am just going to have to toughen up and get it all done myselfTaking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -

Yes, i looked at some silks from india today actually! I have some saris too, that have been window dressings, and once, when living with hirrid wallpaper, we hung them from the ceiling light, to the edges of the room and made a sort of a tent of saris inside the room. Was magical.0 -
double edged question.....

Q2.....do slugs walk/slither on woodchips [are slug pellets necesary?]

Only delphiniums out of those three are martyrs to slugs, but they will all be fine with woodchips.
I don't use woodchip so I dunno if slugs dislike it, or if they hide in it. They don't like sharp grit etc, but wood is altogether softer.0 -
Re doing things by the book.
Sometimes it's a good idea. For example, when we decided to buy this place, we thought the non-local tie meant we qualified to buy it based on previous rather than future work.....but we checked, just in case.
We also got PP for the polytunnel. :A
However, now we're here, it's a good thing that the previous owner didn't adhere strictly to the land's classification, or we'd only have a 30' garden. He got away with that for over 10 years, and its fortunate from our perspective that he did.0 -
ive always used grit or crushed baked eggshells.
my friends gardener has plonked slug bait where she has chickens free range, puppies running around plus grandaughter [bright blue pellets!]and as friend is in london for a few days i asked the gardener "are these pellets safe for animals" he just shrugged and said " dunno,no idea" and carried on. i read the pot and hey ho "DANGEROUS TO ALL ANIMALS AND AQUATICS"... he didnt care so i left a note to tell her son NOT to let the puppies anywhere near that area and just hope all the chickens will be ok.
i hate thoughtless people... and i hate MORE, people who dont care...

Yes, slugs & snails can travel across woodchip. It does seem to deter them a little (particularly the larger ornamental bark when freshly laid - maybe because it's rougher but it smooths with being weathered) but it's not as good a deterrent as gravel, IMO.0
