with our place if you look in one direction it is totally rural, if you look behind you there is a so called posh housing estate..

We have been lighting the fire every day/night depending on when we manage to get there...

Unless someone complains then we will carry on...

It would take for ever and a day to chip it all, and we only have an electrical chipper.

Phoned the council on monday regarding the tree preservation orders, as the map he emailed me showed only a small proportion of the trees covered by a blanket area order... but they didnt send me a map for another part of hte land ( if that makes sense)

So I am meeting their tree rep today to look at the land to see what is what, I might have made a bit of a rod for our backs, as he might want more trees to be given a tpo, but at least we know, before we start clearing part of the land where there are a load of trees..

Rozee he could be pulling your leg about the fires, thinking he could wind you up, as you are not from the area, but he could be genuine, or it could be that your neighbours generally just want to be awkward and not want you to burn on your land...

Now that he has mentioned it, for whatever reason I would check it out with your local council, Also in the future if you intened doing anything that might ruffle a few feathers so to speak, again I would check out where you stand legally, and with the council....

I agree with what ALFIE said a few posts back about neighbours automatically being on the defense when it comes to new neighbours... with us the one i had a bit of a set too with, has turned out to be great, and now we are slowly starting to see the true colours of other neighbours:eek:

Neighbours  Thanks for your replies. I called the council and they said there are no bye laws regarding the prevention of fires and as long as we aren't causing a nuisance we can burn garden waste on our own land. It does make you wonder about people's agendas...

I will file that information away about that chap. Maybe I should start a neighbour spreadsheet like that guy who did a spreadsheet about his girlfriends and dates that has gone viral on facebook :D

Just wondered if anyone can suggest any creative ways of finding a rural property to rent - just something small, scruffy and cheap would be ideal.

Have tried the following: Right Move, National Trust (great but nothing in the area I want), advertising in wanteds in local paper, village shops, farming newspapers, National Park. Where else can I try? There must be quite a few farm cottages standing empty where farmers have never bothered to look for a tenant or think they have to radically update them so end up leaving them empty. Have also tried limited word of mouth but have to be a bit careful as my current landlord is well known and don't really want news of my search to reach his ears.

I'd like to try private estates too, but don't know how to find them - I only know of one and there are no properties to rent there at the moment.

    Anyone any other ideas?

    Thanks Liz

lol LIR.....i bet that was a suprise

Rozee..... we are doing things at the mo that only costs time ( and a little bit of money) it is suprising what an hour or two a night can achive...

Eliza.... those types of properties you are looking for will never be advertised, they will only be by word of mouth, as no estate/letting agent will put them on their books due to them not meeting certain standards etc..

Depending on your area, is it worth starting to go to local farm auctions etc and getting to know the farmers etc and putting the feelers out?

Tbh alot of farmers etc dont like letting old properties out as it could have on going complications with income, council tax, and once a tennant is in place, then they kick up a fuss and want the house to a certain standard.

What area are you looking at?

Thank you. I'm looking in the Peak Park and surrounding patch - quite a large area really. I already live in the southern peaks and wish to move further north but am open to ideas really, pretty flexible. I had a farm cottage lined up but unfortunately it fell through due to planning problems with its conversion. I also have the feelers out a bit in the farming community but as I say, don't want word getting back to my present landlord till I'm ready. A tad tricky!

Thanks again. Will keep on the case.
