Take the old cable to any TV or electrical shop and say 'one of these please'. Yes, if you want to get digital TV, then the aerial must feed to the Freeview box.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

OK, will try that. No shops like that anywhere round here - guess B&Q will have this?

If B&Q is your only option, they do sell fly leads e.g. here

This one has the other sort of connector on the end (is it called an F-connector?). Wish I could believe this really will sort it out, but I'm having problems....

Well you have told us that "the cable is knackered".

If you don't see at least 50% signal strength displayed on the digibox set-up screen, then normally you won't get a picture - it either works fine or it doesn't work at all.

OK... no cable like this at B&Q, but I found an old-fashioned shop where they looked at the cable, found a short inside it (!!) and fixed it.

Brought it back, plugged it in as above, and... still nothing. I am now thinking that I have done something wrong in rewiring it all.

Aerial goes from wall to UHF socket of antiference box, and fly lead goes from an outlet socket of the antiference box to the digibox, which is connected to TV by another fly lead. That's the two sockets on the digibox, and the one socket on the TV. There is an aerial socket on the video, but nowhere else to put it except into the antiference box. I am totally sure, though, that there were two cables coming out of the outlet sockets of the antiference box. Hope this makes some sense.

There are SCART cables between video, digibox and TV (two in each).

have you checked the power to the antiference box ?

Plug something else into socket to check that it is working ?

Edit: ignore above, it has been pointed out to me you said you had red light on box

There is no point this lead being connected because the TV has no digital tuner and your region is digital only. The digibox output should connect to the TV via the Scart lead.

Similarly there is no point connecting an aerial lead to your video because it has no digital tuner and can now only be used to play back recorded tapes.

There are SCART cables between video, digibox and TV (two in each).

Now that you have a fly lead that does not have a short circuit, have you rescanned the digibox? If you previously scanned with a short circuited lead you may have lost all stored channels.

What signal strength is displayed on the digibox?

Keep it simple and just get the digibox and TV connected and working first.

I believe suiko said red light was coming on antiference box when plugged in.

Just connect digibox and tv first, forget about the video just now.

    * Sorry espresso just saw your post, i must type faster!
