    Thanks again everyone,

We are now having the doors done for £140 but got to wait until 3rd April, but thats OK.

It just goes to show that you have to shop around for your quotes. I contacted the original builder and informed him I couldnt accept his quote of £240 because I had accepted another quote of a local carpenter. He was fine with this and understood, he even offered to come around next week on his own (therefore not paying for 2 builders!!) and do the job himself for the same price!! (£140). But I am sticking with the carpenter because I feel thats only fair.

Thanks again all for your advice.

I know this is an old thread but it outrages me when I see this.
I am a Bench Joiner by trade and also do certain aspects of 2nd fix carpentry i.e hanging doors, architrave, skirting etc.

    Can you answer me this?

What is involved in hanging a door?
    What weight are the doors?

£50 per door for eggs shell hollow doors is about right and £60 for heavier doors up to 30 kg.

Expect to pay a day rate for fitting a front door. Some can weigh as much as 50 kg.

Also expect to pay for a 1/2 day if it is only one internal door. Tools out of van, set up work area, clean up, tools back in van.

I have also quoted up before and not heard anything back from the customer and then 2 months later he wanted me to split my quote up as there was 2 different jobs in it.

The reason was because he had gone for the cheapest quote and the workmanship was so poor he didn't want to use that person again.

Also when a customer buys their own materials the trade may have to take extra time because the wrong or poor quality materials have been bought. This can incur more labour time or diesel cost where the trade has to go out and get the right part.

To all the people that say that a joiner/carpenter or any trade in that instance should work for near to nothing a day needs to ask themselves how much it costs to run a business? I list a few of my costs:

    Van Tax,
    Van Insurance,
    Premises Rental,
    Premises Insurance,
    Public Liability Insurance,
    Tool Sharpening,
    Advertising,
    Business Phone Bill,
    Premises Electricity,
    Fuel,
    Accountancy fees.

Now take all those services/products off my daily/monthly income and see how much I really earn.

Times have moved on and living costs have gone up so this thread should be updated because anyone looking at this will be seeing prices of yesteryear..

Homeland...it does apper that you may have picked up on an old thread...ive commented quite vocally on the cost of hanging doors on this forum since I had 6 made and fitted about 6 months ago...

Mine were expensive handmade doors hung by the company that made them...I saw the work involved and the fact that it took 2 men the best part of 2 days to habng them because of the weight of them!
My doors in my opinion are lovely and all in cost £2000 so I for one dont undervalue the work put in by a quality trademan!
frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

    2017 toiletries challenge 179 out 145 in ...£18.64 spend

I was aware that it was an old thread. Even more reason for reviving it lol. I googled how long to hang a door and this came up.

Anyone else doing the same will come across it and may think the prices in this thread are current day price. Just a little misleading!

If you can see it from my point of view being the Trade it's good to educate certain people into what actually goes into running a business and that it's not always best to go with the cheaper quote.

I have had 2 customer say to me in the last couple of weeks that they thought it was going to only take this long and expect you to work for nothing  The question is does the person who is asking for the work to be done know what is actually involved?

Trades get it in the neck all the time about how expensive they are but after all the above outgoing costs that initial hourly charge is reduced dramatically.

As they were Wickes cheapo doors i guess it is, the highest quote i received was £25 per door.

Though i guess time will tell, i live up north i guess our joiners need the work more....

    No mate.
Supply and fix 9x FD30 doors plus one FD60.
Complete with intermittant smoke guard strips , 3x grade 16 hinges ,over head self closures , night latch ,handles , replacement fire approved doorstop, fire approved hard wood thresholds.
Price to include the removal and disposal of old door and doorstop.
Fill old hinge holes in frame ,trim door to size , route out smoke guard strips ,hang, replace doorstop and threshold. night latch and handles plus overhead closure. I also know this is a period property ,the existing frames are weird and wonderful sizes , twisted and not square and theres three floors.
If you can do it for less, i will give you a job.
