I would suspect that once the Prius falls below £1K, you'd be looking at eeek money for a battery.

I don't think there have been any issues with the batteries, still it will make bangernomics a lot more interesting with hybrid vehicles. Only time will tell....

Isn't the problem with the Prius that Toyota only warrant the battery to 10 years/150,000 miles and the subsequent replacement cost swamps the then value of the car? While old IC engines can be nursed along into their doddery, once the batteries gone, the point of it is gone.

They're NiMH batteries, and have a finite life. Under normal use, five years is pushing it for a normal NiMH cell, and it's only the gentle treatment the Toyota charging regime gives them that has led to them lasting so long. The battery is kept within an 80% envelope all the time. Even so, they will eventually turn their toes up. If the earliest Priuses are now fifteen years old, I wouldn't touch one with a bargepole - with one exception; the odd Prius is broken and newer batteries are available here and there. Only if I had access to a cheap battery would I take one on.
I see Toyota are changing to a lithium pack next year, but the same caveats apply.

Well after thinking I was leaving bangernomics, there's been a change in direction.
Had a test drive in a 1999 Discovery at £1500 with a years MOT and a years tax, and a 2003 Clio DCI with a years MOT at £1400.

But then I got the chance of this.

11 Months MOT, no tax. 04 plate. £500.
It's a 3.2 V6 auto and works fine. The OH loves it.

£31 to cover the 2 weeks remaining on the wifes insurance (including amendment fees) I was going to pay for day insurance to get it home, but that would have been less cost effective. The next years insurance is £235. Tax was £285.

Seems cheap for that size engine, is it a reliable model
  • Reliable costs for insurance and tax? Or Fronteras in general :) ?

The Insurance costs are for 10k a year, business use and fully comp. The £31 was to cover a fortnight till it was up for renewal. The £235 is what I've paid for the next years insurance.

Tax is as it's pre 2006, if it had been after 2006 it would probably been a lot more, with pre 2001 a bit cheaper.
  • In case anyone's looking for a bangernomics luxo-barge, I know of a 1994/5 M plate X300 Jag XJ6 which is in good nick apart from bubbly rear arches, with 160ishK on, which my colleague's owned for at least the last 6 years and has really loved and cherished. He wants £750 for it.

In 2005 I had a 1997 Honda Civic that I purchased from a family relative for £900. It had 166k miles on the clock and few dents, scratches, 3mm tread tyres at the front and 4mm at the back, 2 months MOT left and no tax.

Drove it for 3 years, and did around 15k, only spent £40 on 2 used tyres at the front. Rears just had 2mm left, and mate let me use his Castrol oil (he had a Skyline and he changed the oil every 6 months only doing 5k miles/year) so I used that.

    In 2008 sold for £500.

    Frugality - love it.
I did the same with my bike oil - 2K changes and put the oil into my old snotter van. Never had a problem with that.
