I paid £1000 for an 02 Yaris Verso in 2011. I scrapped it in 2022. It cost me tyres and 3 bits of welding in all that time. It was still running beautifully when the rear spring broke, jammed in the wheel arch and took out a chassis rail. Sad to see it go. Toyota really let themselves down with rust proofing. I picked up a Vauxhall Agila 05 in October for £500. Excellent condition. Good service history and no problems in last 9 months. I got £380 for the Yaris so I'm£120 down. Not bad.5

Been thinking of a Yaris for my next banger - how are they for body rot?

Sister had a 54 plate Yaris for about 15 years living in a coastal town. The last 3 years or so rust was an advisory but never became anything more than that.

I bought my 06 plate Hyundai coupe for £1250 in 2017 with 85000 miles on the clock. It’s now up to 149k and running well but costing me in small repairs - some of which I’m going without such as aircon (it had such amazing aircon😰).
3 years ago I had the clutch replaced. It is showing corrosion around two wheel arches and I had to replace the driver’s seat belt and other bits last MOT. Suddenly this ‘summer’ whilst driving in heavy rain the wipers seized up completely. I luckily was able to pull up on a grass verge and once I disentangled them realised the driver’s side was ok. My mechanic did a fix for £90 so they are working again but he said ‘you need to think about changing your car’ though he thinks they are good cars. Just ancient and starting to cost. He said the exhaust (original) has some wear. Now the ABS light is on - he said rear wheel sensor which I will get fixed. Then yesterday on motorway there was a whiny sound which I couldn’t recognise.
so now back on Autotrader starting to prepare for a change but 😭😱 no idea of reasonable costs these days. Seems I get old banger for £5k or more at that spec?! I liked having cruise control but now also want automatic due to ease of parking etc. No idea basically but need four doors and higher up for older relatives. Astra? Focus? I don’t want small car as I do a lot of motorway driving. I must admit the mechanic’s comments pushed me into accepting need to move on but budget right now is only about £2k though I have plenty more available on credit. I am also looking for comfortable cruiser so it rules out newer cheaper cars eg small Toyotas etc. any recommendations please as I have some credit card debt so want to try and be sensible. Thanks0 -
Just bought an 05 plate Volvo S60. 182,000 miles, very good service history. Had a rec3nt timing belt change. It’s an SE with leather and the early D5 engine 163bhp. £800 private sale and has 12 months MOT. Will let you know how I go on. Trip computer is showing 53.7mpg. Given it a good clean, buff and wax yesterday, It’s had a recently oil change and 4 recent tyres.1
