  • 10K oil change intervals are purely to please the company car buyers. For longevity, change the oil at 5K.

Hi, we have a Megane (2005) 2, 1.5 DCI Diesel. We bought it with, wait for it....152,000 miles on the clock for £650.
The car has no service history. A month after buying it in november 2022 the car overheated and then had a new timing belt and water pump fitted (£600). Did that
Car runs well now. Ive changed the Oil, Oil filter, cleaned the EGR valve, changed the pads and rotors, fixed the loose handbrake and changed the inner steering ball joint and changed the fuel filter. Did that all myself.
Additives have also been added, probably wont do anything though.
Anyway, how many more miles do you think we could get out of this if we look after it, regular 10,000 mile oil changes and servicing?
I ask because we live in a rural area and picking up used cars is a bit of a headache.

    Kind regards,

    J
If you look after it the way you have already, 200+k should be easy maybe even 300k, as long as the overheat didn't warp the head or overstress the head gasket :) Sounds like you're pretty handy so higher mileages should be easier to achieve.

BUT.... it's a renault, so the electrics could kill it earlier!! ;)

Would a V6 3 litre diesel automatic Infiniti QX50 make a good bangernomic?

I’m not sure these are in the Bangernomic category yet, but it would certainly be a good buy, based on our experience with an Infiniti.

Brake light kept lighting up on my 2002 Focus Ghia every time I went round a roundabout or took a sharp fast turn. Turned out it was just the brake fluid level low. Topped it up with a bottle of ASDA's £4.75 finest and it's now all good. Sweet bangernomics.

Took Fusion Junior for it's MoT yesterday..... better than expected, just needs a middle section exhaust and the headlights buffing up :) So will have a fresh ticket for around £100 or less :)  There's a couple of tyres on the way out (Advisories) which'll be about £50-odd but they can wait for a couple of months.

That takes it to in the region of £1141 in total, 2 months into it's third year with me. Even with the tyres when I get them it'll be £1200 for 3 years, which ain't too bad at all.... Fusion senior spoiled me a bit at £900-odd for 3.5 years of ownership, but I'm hoping at only 103k miles I'll have Junior for several more years yet :)

This Fusion (senior & junior) have been very good buys and prove that you can still buy a good reliable “old car” to run for a number of years. The knack is understanding what car to go for. Although not bangernomics my 2008 Volvo V70 was bought 4 years ago at £2750, added a further 40,000 miles and apart from tyres, servicing and cambelt has been great. Comfortable, reliable. It’s coming up to 15 years old, I’d like to think it will see me another 10 years.

I bought a 3 year old Volvo C70 at auction. It’s lasted us over 13 years, and really there’s nothing wrong with it at all.
