our stores havent got round to offering baskets - but - the staff DONT MIND you using any means available, empty boxes, your own shopping bags even, as long as they can see that you are putting ALL the goods on the belt!
we just pile the items back in the trolley and pack at the packing shelf - or if thats crowded we pack at the boot of our car! we dont mind - its all part of the Aldi shopping experience! plus it gets everyone through the tills so much quicker.

There werent any Aldis or Lidls where I live until about 2 or so months ago when a Lidl opened.

I went there on opening day and it was packed at 9am - as youd expect, with people looking around. I dont think Ill go back. No baskets - really irritating as I only wanted a few bits, but enough that I could carry them in my hands so had to a get a trolley - so the aisles were jammed as they arent wide enough. Bought some blackberries as they were a lot cheaper than in Sains, but got them home and they were sort of mouldy inside so couldnt eat them.

There were a few offers on that were ok, but lots of the branded stuff seemed to be similar prices to Tesco/Sains otherwise.

Now when I drive past, half the time the car park is mostly empty, having said that I havent driven past on a Saturday mid morning for a while, which I guess would be their busiest time.

What annoys me most about it, is that they put about 2 leaflets a week through our door advertising their offers. So each week yet more to put in the recycyling bin, such a waste of paper!

You are self-employed at Aldi and Lidl though so bear in mind tax and NI has to come off that wage advertised.

Seems strange they can get away with calling their staff self-employed as surely they would have certain hours theyd work and other rules like that which means someone isnt really self employed?

Also means the staff wouldnt get any sick or holiday pay..

I heard from several people that they are not nice places to work, they pay may be better than other supermarkets, but you are very much treated as a 'machine'

I also applied for Lidl's graduate management scheme a few years back (Aldi's is very similar) and while the pay is fantastic for a graduate scheme. It was made very clear at the interview that you were expected to work 20hours+ extra unpaid overtime a week (they make you sign a form that opts you out of the EU working regulations!) personally I am happier to be now in a lesser paid job, but actually having a life apart from work.

their stores are of course great value for the customer though.
  • I rarely get to Lidls, but I love their Chorizo, Salami, and other such deli staples. Bargain, and such good quality.
    Oh well...

  • Hi, i would just like to say this website and aldi has changed my life.Since becoming ill with M.E 2 years ago therefore lost most of my income aldi shopping has saved my family lots of money. The products are very good quality with the selection of products get ting better weekly. My local aldi used to be quiet but now you are lucky to find a parking spot!!
It did take us a while to adjust but as my DH had to do the majority of the shopping it suited him with it being local and a quick shop compared with the other SM.
  • Hopefully the sales rises at Aldi and Lidl will put further pressure on the 'big 4' to actually reduce their prices and not just think of elaborate points schemes, or fake price cuts to bamboozle shoppers. Maybe if they cut some of the overheads in the marketing departments that think up these 'fake' offers, they could cut the prices on the shelves...

I got some vouchers from Tesco Clubcard the other day, and it was the same old '25 points extra when you buy bread' '25 points extra when you buy fruit' type vouchers...an offer so pointless and unappealing that I don't know why they bother sending them out! I'll stick to saving more money by shopping elsewhere!

The one thing about ALDI staff that I have noticed is that they come over as being a lot lot more customer friendly than most supermarket staff. ( In this area anyway)
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • i just hope these 'budget' shops have enough staff, on the tills!
(and pay them WELL - none of this workfarce malarkey!)
